Course Title: Beginning Vietnamese I Course Number: ASTV101 01

Course Description: Beginning Vietnamese 1 is a course in which the students learn basic Vietnamese vocabulary and structure to function within the classroom. The emphasis is on the spoken language. The course will be developed to the use of words and expressions commonly used in conversation and informal writing. By using and reusing a limited vocabulary in a variety of contexts, this course will provide opportunities for the students to master the structures, which are most frequently used in Vietnamese. The course will stress the audiolingual skills, which must be acquired through constant listening and practice. Thus the study of formal grammar to be kept to a minimal level. The approach to grammar in the course is functional and inductive. Correct grammar is made habitual through intensive practice and constant use.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Linguistics: (1) Listening and speaking (use basic Vietnamese expressions in the immediate environment), (2) Reading (demonstrate comprehension of reading passages by responding correctly to questions based on the dialogues), (3) Writing (phonemes, short sentences, short exercises stressing the grammar and the vocabulary learned in the dialogues), (4) Structure (use nouns, gender, subject pronouns, statements and questions), (5) Vocabulary (greetings, numbers, dates and times, locations and sizes, seasons and weather, shopping and money, human body and clothing, meals and drinks).

Culture: (1) Vietnamese customs, (2) Vietnamese education and (3) Vietnamese life style.

Activities: Students are introduced to Vietnamese in a natural cultural context through situational dialogues or narratives. They master the vocabulary and structures in the dialogues and narratives by means of variety of drills. This mastery consisting of listening

Comprehension, Model imitation, repetition, substitution and self expression.

Evaluation: Evaluation will be based on class participation, homework, cultural activities or project, midterm tests, language lab, and final examination.
