Course Description: Beginning Vietnamese 11 is a course in which the students learn basic Vietnamese vocabularies and structures to function within the classroom. The emphasis is on the spoken language of the Vietnamese in America. The course will be developed to the use of words and expressions commonly used in conversation and informal writing. By using and reusing a limited vocabulary in a variety of contexts, the course will provide opportunities for the students to master the structures, which are most frequently used in Vietnamese. The course will stress the audio-lingual skills, which must be acquired through constant listening and practice.

Performance Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

Linguistics

Listening and speaking (use basic Vietnamese expressions in the immediate environment.). Reading (demonstrate comprehension of reading passage by responding correctly to questions based on dialogues.) Writing (phonemes, short and long sentences, short exercises stressing the grammar and the vocabulary learned in the dialogues.) Structures (use nouns, genders, accents, subject pronouns, statements and questions.)

Vocabulary (greetings, discussions, sharing ideas and feelings, and cultural comprehension.) Culture: Vietnamese geography of national resourcesActivities: Students are introduced to Vietnamese in a naturally cultural context through situational dialogues or narratives by means of variety of drills. This mastery is consisting of listening comprehension, model imitation, repetition, and selfexpression. Vietnamese New Year's participation is highly motivated to preserve the culture of Vietnam in America.

Research Paper: You are required to write "The Geography of Vietnam." Papers must be typed and cannot exceed four pages, double-spaced, with standard margins. You must cite all sources using endnotes or footnotes. Include a bibliography at the end of your paper.
