These course materials are for students in EBIO 101 lecture and EBIO 111 lab for Fall 2007. Section 01 (TR) will be taught by Dr. Fleury, Section 02 (MWF) will be taught by Dr. Sigel. Both sections share the same textbooks and lab syllabus (below).

All students enrolled in lecture must also take the EBIO 111 laboratory that accompanies the lecture section.

Exam # 3

-- Covers all material under Kingdom Fungi and Kingdom Plantae (plants=75, fungi=25)

-- Format - short answer objective

-- Pt. 1 Matching - taxonomic name w/ terms (20)

-- Pt. 2 Fill-ins, taken from plant/fungi terms (30)

-- Pt. 3 Taxonomy - Phyla w/examples, Common names OK for exs. (20)

-- Pt. 4 Economic, ecological, evolutionary importance of organisms (20)

Final Exam

-- Final will be another “hour” exam = 100 pts

-- ~ 50 pts = ecology, ~ 50 pts = cumulative

-- Format will be nearly identical to the hour exams

-- Exam will take about 1 hour to complete

-- For matching and importance questions, answers will ONLY go to Phylum level (Annelids, Molluscs, Bryophyta etc..), no classes, no orders etc…

Lecture Syllabus for Dr. Fleury 01

Textbook: P.H. Raven et al. Biology. McGraw-Hill - 8th edition only - custom text. Do not purchase any earlier edition, it will not correspond to the newly  revised lecture and lab. This half-price custom text is not available through any online vendors).

To supplement your text for the material on the history of evolution, you will find a great web page at UC Berkeley on early evolutionary thought:

 http://evolution.berkeley.edu/evolibrary/article/0_0_0/history_01

Course Philosophy: Although we share this planet with many curious and interesting organisms, we are largely unaware of their existence and importance. The lecture and lab will survey the five kingdoms of life, and help you gain a better perspective on your place in the natural world.

Grading (for 01 section ONLY): Exams will be based solely on material covered in lecture, therefore attendance at lecture is required. There will be three one-hour lecture exams and a cumulative final exam. Each of these exams will count for 100 points. There will be no make-up exams or extra credit work under any circumstances, including attendance at university sponsored athletic, ROTC or other events. Missing a lecture exam will result in a grade of zero for that exam. The lowest lecture exam, however, will be dropped before calculating your final grade. You must take at least two of the lecture exams as well as the final exam in order to pass the course. Each student will be expected to uphold the ideals of academic integrity expressed in the Honor Code of their college or division. Consult the LAS Honor Code for details. Violations of the honor code will be prosecuted. Initial grades will be based on a standard percentage scale (see table below). Before final grade are assigned, however, significant individual improvement over the course of the semester will be considered as an important factor in the final grade. Further information about exam format and content will be given in lecture. Grades will be posted on Blackboard following each exam. The instructor's spreadsheet (not Blackboard) will be used to calculate your final grade. Final grades will be determined as a percentage of 300 points as follows:

A      93-100  B+    87-89 C+    77-79 D+    67-69
A-     90-92 B      83-86 C      73-76 D      60-66

B-    80-82 C-    70-72 D-    55-59

All students enrolled in lecture must also take the EBIO 111 laboratory that accompanies the lecture section, and vice-versa.
The two classes are co-requisites. Both lab and lecture are designed to complement and reinforce one another.

Lab Syllabus for both sections Fleury/Sigel
Lab Supervisor  Dr. Bruce Fleury

For help with registration for lab sections, contact: Christy Day, Dinwiddie 210, x8282,  clday@tulane.edu

Lab Manual

The lab manual is available for purchase from the university bookstore, together with your photographic atlas and dissecting kit. You can also download the complete lab manual in Microsoft Word ".doc" format--> HERE

Important: However you obtain it, you will be expected to bring your own printed copy of the weekly lab guide to each lab session!!

Laboratory Goals

This lab will give you the opportunity to examine many of the organisms discussed in lecture. You will have an opportunity to interact with many funky organisms.

Laboratory Guidelines

Labs meet in Science and Engineering Labs Building 218 (adjacent to the ERC/Financial Aid offices).

There will be no makeup labs. You must complete all assigned work during the regular laboratory period. You must attend the section you are registered for. If you are unable to attend your usual lab session due to an accident or illness, we can occasionally place you in a different section for that week, pending the approval of both TA’s concerned. BUT you will need a written note or email from the Dean’s office, or your academic adviser, or your physician (or your mom) explaining your absence from your usual lab section. We will NOT schedule makeup labs for social events or travel convenience. You must notify your TA as soon as possible if you know you will miss a lab for any reason.

There will be no makeup quizzes. Makeups for missed quizzes will be given only in special circumstances, at the discretion of the lab supervisor and the TA in charge of that section. To some extent, exams are tailored to the material emphasized in each individual section. Taking a quiz in another section, even with a legitimate medical excuse, could result in a substantially lower score.

Be prepared when you come to lab. Read the lab guide in advance, to ease the osmosis of knowledge. Read through it as you examine the slides and specimens. The lab guide also contains step by step instructions for the dissections. Bring your lab atlas to class and compare the photos etc. to the specimens you'll see in lab. Quiz questions are often based on recognition and recall, and the atlas can help you remember what you saw in lab.

Clean your station thoroughly before you leave. Your area must be clean, your microscope properly stored, and all display materials returned to wherever you found them. Take only one or two slides at a time from the display area (some are in short supply) and be sure to return them to the proper tray.

All plant and animal matter goes into the garbage container (near the sinks). Do not leave arms, legs, lower life forms, pieces of plants, etc. in the sink or your dissecting pans. Dispose of slides and other glassware ONLY in the glassware disposal container provided.

You will be held responsible for any damage you do to the microscopes or to the lab instructor. Don't try to rush through the exercises -- remember that everyone in lab is playing with sharp knives and small pieces of glass. No running around the room with scissors!

Have fun. Labs shouldn't be a grind. This will be your first (and perhaps only) chance to see many of the strange and fascinating creatures with whom we share this Earth. So tease a worm - tickle a leech - annoy the algae! Unless the display material labels or TA says otherwise, the first rule in lab is handle (with care).

Grading
Laboratory grades will be based on 375 points calculated as: 10 worksheets @ 15 points each, and 9 quizzes @ 25 points each. Final letter grades will be calculated as shown below:

A      93-100  B+    87-89 C+    77-79 D+    67-69
A-     90-92 B      83-86 C      73-76 D      60-66

B-    80-82 C-    70-72 D-    55-59

Quizzes will be given in each lab period
. Weekly quizzes at the start of each lab will cover material learned in the previous week's lab. Emphasis in quizzes will be on microscope slides and specimens, terms from the lab manual term list, and the questions posed in your lab guide and worksheets. Worksheets will be assigned in lab, covering material learned in the current lab session, and must be completed neatly and accurately to receive full credit.

You must be prompt in attending lab, or you will miss the quiz at the beginning of the lab period. Students who enter the lab after the quiz is completed may only take the quiz at the discretion of the TA in charge of that section. Makeups for missed quizzes will be given only in special circumstances, at the discretion of the lab supervisor and the TA in charge of that section. There will be no make-ups for worksheets. If you miss more than three labs, you will automatically receive a failing grade for the lab.
