@text "STRUCTURE AT 2.8 ANGSTROMS RESOLUTION OF F1 ATPASE FROM BOVINE HEART MITOCHONDRIA" ATP synthase is the principle enzyme for production of ATP in mitochondria, chloroplasts and bacteria. ATP synthase consists of two large functional domains, the globular multisubunit assembly F1, and the intrinsic membrane domain Fo. The Fo subunit, a slender 45 angstrom long stalk, allows proton flux through the membrane and relays catalytic changes to the enzymatic F1 domain. The F1 domain, a heteromeric sphere with an 80-100 angstrom diameter, conformationally changed by Fo via the proton diffusion, then powers the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP supplying a major portion of ATP to most cells. Combined, the FoF1-ATPase drives synthesis of ATP powered by diffusive proton transport. The crystallization of the catalytic F1 domain, as published by Abrahams in Nature 370 (6491):621-628, can be accomplished by stalk disruption and protein purification. This reveals the F1 subunit stoichiometry to be 3 alpha: 3 beta: 1 gamma: 1 delta: 1 epsilon.
