Mutated proteins of this type have been implicated as the cause of certain cancers, presumably by keeping the cell in a perpetual 'on' state resulting in abnormal cell proliferation and tumor formation. In this kinemage, you can examine the structure of the Ras protein, which includes an alpha/beta fold with 6 beta-strands comprising a central beta-sheet surrounded by 5 alpha-helices (from PDB file, 4Q21). You can also turn on a feature called 'Ribbon' which presents another way of representating the protein backbone (this looks better when 'Alpha-C's' is turned off). The alpha-helices and beta-strands are highlighted in different colors.
