@text "SECONDARY STRUCTURE -- THE BETA-SHEET" The other secondary structure element that can be found in proteins is the beta-sheet. In contrast to the alpha-helix, the beta-sheet does not have to be made up of a continuous region of protein. A beta-sheet can contain two or more stretches of amino acids, each one known as a beta-strand. Each strand is usually 5-10 amino acids long in a nearly extended conformation and is held in place by the sharing of hydrogens between mainchain atoms from neighboring strands. The beta-strands are pleated and the sidechains alternate up and down, due to steric considerations. In this kinemage, you will see a two-stranded, antiparallel beta-sheet; the two strands are connected by a three-residue turn ('turns' and 'loops' are also secondary structure features). In later kinemages, you will see beta-sheets within proteins that contain more than two strands and you will observe beta-sheets that are considered 'parallel' or 'antiparallel', based on the direction the strand follows relative to the first and last amino acids in the protein. @kinemage 1 @caption Two-stranded antiparallel beta-sheet.
