Title: Mexican Muralists: Orozco, Rivera, Siqueiros
Mediatype: Book
Description:

Born of the twenties’ explosive revolutionary energy and culminating in the social consciousness of the sixties, the Mexican mural movement represents one of the most powerful and significant achievements in public art during the twentieth century. This book follows the careers of the three most prominent artists of the movement, José Clemente Orozco, Diego Rivera, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. Beautifully illustrated, this volume traces the lives and works of the legendary masters, from their rural childhoods through the bloody years of the revolution to artistic maturity and prestigious commissions from the post-revolutionary Mexican government. With stunning color reproductions of all the major murals, both those in Mexico and in the United States, the book locates the paintings in their cultural background and explores the artists’ achievements within the political framework of their homeland. Mexican Muralists tells the story of the artists who fostered an unprecedented marriage of politics and art, and in so doing forged a new national identity. The author, Desmond Rochfort, has been a professor of Art and Design at the University of Alberta, Canada. Description: With twenty-five years of "help" from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank intended to bring Third World nations such as Jamaica into the fold of free market economies, these "restructuring" policies have crippled Jamaica's efforts toward self-reliant development while enriching the lenders. This scathing film is an unapologetic look at the "new world order" from the point of view of Jamaican workers and farmers, as well as government and policy officials. Featuring a dynamic reggae soundtrack and a searing voice over based on text by Jamaica Kincaid, as well as interviews with former Jamaican Prime Minister Michael Manley, Deputy Director of the IMF Stanley Fisher and President of Haiti Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Life and Debt portrays the relationship between Jamaican poverty and the practices of the World Bank while driving home the devastating consequences of globalization. Title: Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Mediatype: VHS
Description: The astonishing Klaus Kinski plays Don Lope de Aguirre, a brutal conquistador who leads his soldiers into the Amazon jungle in an obsessive quest for gold. The story is of the expedition's relentless degeneration into brutality and despair, but the movie is much more than its plot. Director Werner Herzog strove, whenever possible, to replicate the historical circumstances of the conquistadors, and the sheer human effort of traveling through the dense mountains and valleys of Brazil in armor creates a palpable sense of struggle and derangement. This sense of reality, combined with Kinski's intensely furious performance, makes Aguirre, the Wrath of God a riveting film. Directed by Werner Herzog, Germany/Peru, 1977.

Title: The City (La Ciudad)
Mediatype: VHS
Description: La Ciudad is a narrative snapshot of a side of New York that is rarely seen: the city of illegal immigrants, the homeless, seasonal workers, sweatshops, and laborers from Manhattan's Latin American neighborhoods. An intensive collaboration with the immigrant community over a five-year period resulted in a complex four-part narrative in which the subjects of the film are its principal actors. Set in the present day, the film follows four separate stories of immigrant life. A young laborer, scavenging for bricks, is killed when a wall collapses; two teenagers from the same village fall in love, then lose each other in a housing project; a homeless father tries to enroll his daughter in school; a young garment worker seeks justice in the sweatshops. Uprooted, disenfranchised, exploited, and heroic in their strivings, these characters and stories produce a fresh and serious new work that is completely engaging.

Title: Free to Fly: The U.S.-Cuba Link
Mediatype: VHS
Description:

This is the story of the struggle to maintain links between the Cuban and American people. The U.S. embargo on Cuba has severely limited the degree to which U.S. citizens can legally travel to Cuba. This film begins with the idea that families have the right to see one another and that U.S. citizens have the constitutional right to go where they please, arguing that such travel strengthens family ties, fosters cultural exchange and builds understanding. Nonetheless, the film explains, over the last 30 years, anti-Castro activists have engaged in violent intimidation tactics of beatings, political assassinations, and the bombing of businesses and even a plane to prevent the expansion of U.S. travel to Cuba. Still, a variety of human rights organizations, businesspeople, tourists, politicians of both the Democratic and Republican parties, and ordinary Cuban-Americans with family members on the island have continued to do all they can to ensure access to Cuba. Description:

“Matriarchy?" "Tribe of Amazons?" That is what explorers and other outsiders romantically named the Zapotecs of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Oaxaca, Mexico. The Isthmus is a place where women run the economy, where cultural identity is of utmost importance, where "fat is beautiful" and where female ancestors displayed ingenuity and spunk in times of war and political resistance. Anthropologists call it a partnership society where one is first a human being, an individual and only second and incidentally a man or a woman. (It is a love poem to the Isthmus women.) We hear from five women whose stories are interlaced with scenes of work and the resplendent festivities, music, poetry and paintings of the region. They show how valuable economic independence, community, friendship, cultural pride and respect for "women's work" are in giving a woman self-esteem and a sense of purpose in life. They are also a testament to what that sense of dignity contributes to the well-being of society.Directed by Ellen Osborne and Maureen Gosling, Mexico, 1993.

The kidnapper, Sandro do Nascimento, terrorized his victims for four and a half hours as the whole country watched the drama broadcast live on Brazilian TV. Based on an extensive research of stock footage, interviews and official documents, Bus 174 tells 2 parallel stories. Not only does it explain the dramatic events that unfolded as the police tried, and failed, to handle the hijack situation; but it also tells the amazing life story of the hijacker, revealing how a typical Rio de Janeiro street kid was transformed into a violent criminal because society systematically denied him any kind of social existence. Both stories are interwoven in a such a way that they end up explaining why Brazil, and other countries with similar social and economic problems, are so violent. Directed by José Padilha, Brazil, 2004.

Title: Spoils of War
Mediatype: VHS
Description: An important film detailing the struggle to discover the truth behind Argentine's "Dirty War" of the late 1970s and early 1980s, where tens of thousands of students, leftists, dissidents, and their associates "disappeared" without a trace, most likely abducted, jailed or killed by the Argentine military dictatorship. Confused and afraid, the families of the missing gathered in secret, creating a secret code language to discuss their trauma while under surveillance. Filmmaker David Blaustein spent three years interviewing the group, called the "Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo," who relate the brave actions taken when confronted with the government's refusal to disclose the truth. David Blaustein, Argentina/Spain, 2000.
