Title: My Footsteps in Baraguá (Los Hijos de Baraguá)
Mediatype: DVD and Video
Description:

Migration has been and is a constant theme in the life of the people of the Caribbean. In the municipality of Baraguá, in the present province of Ciego de Avila, Cuba, the stories and customs of the English speaking West Indians and their descendants still remain alive. Today, they are a part of Cuba. For some, there is always the nostalgia for the country to which they will never return; others express their total rootedness in today’s Cuba. The youngest will nevertheless be able to learn of their ancestry and better understand the origins of the English surnames they have. In the style of the documentary are merged family memories in a process very familiar to other Caribbean people: for example the trip from Jamaica, Barbados, and other islands to Panama and subsequently to Cuba which started the heady development of the sugar industry in the early years of this century. Direct testimony does not preclude the poetry present in the charm of the environment of the old sugar barracks, the re-creation of the traditional music and dance such as the Maypole, and the use of old photos that allow us an imaginary approach to that past. These immigrants brought two cultures: that of the English colonizers and the genuine one born under the Caribbean sun with the mixing of African rhythms. "My Footsteps in Baraguá" is a contribution to the history of the Africans in Cuba, and to the study of the African diaspora at the end of this century. Directed by Gloria Rolando. 1996.

Title: Play Jankunú Play
Mediatype: DVD and Video
Description: The Garifuna are a Central American people of West African and Native American descent. One of their most popular rituals is wanaragua, a three-fold system of masked Christmas processionals commonly called Jankunú. This ritual is a unique blend of African, European, and Native American (Arawak and Carib) art traditions in which social and cultural identities are expressed through music, dance, and costume. As dancers adorn themselves in colorful regalia to mimic past foreign oppressors they symbolically affirm their identity. They perform stylized movements to the accompaniment of drums and social commentary songs composed by men. Descriptions of the three processions and dance styles are interspersed with interviews by Garifuna singers, drummers, dancers, cultural advocates, and scholars on the significance of rituals. Rare footage of wárini, the now extinct ritual that is the Africanized predecessor to wanaragua, is accompanied by commentary on the significance of the ritual. Examples of wanaragua drumming and dance styles demonstrate how drummers rhythmically interpret the unique movements of each dancer. Translations of song texts show the Garifuna language on screen and reveal themes commonly found in songs. Gender play and role reversal become part of the revelry as Garifuna men mimic European women. Occasionally, Garifuna women, disguised as male wanaragua dancers, join in the festivities. The antics and songs of Charikanari, a ritual featuring stock characters such as the Two-Foot Cow and Devil, are also presented. Images of similar processionals in other locations include photos of Masquerade in St. Kitts-Nevis, Gombey in Bermuda, Jonkonnu in Jamaica, John Kuner (now extinct) in North Carolina, Junkanoo in the Bahamas, and Fancy Dress in Cape Coast, Ghana. Also included are photographs and footage of wanaragua as performed by Garifuna from Guatemala and Honduras with oral accounts explaining why costumes in these countries differ from those traditionally worn in Belize. Play Jankunú Play places the viewer within the context of the Garifuna world at Christmas where music, dance, and art reflect the past to empower the future. Directed by Oliver Greene. 2006.

Title: Death Squadrons: The French School
Mediatype: DVD and Video
Description: Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, much of Latin America was under the control of brutal military juntas engaged in what they perceived as a life-and-death war against communists. The role of the United States' government in this has been well documented, but until now, France's contribution was more shadowy. "Death Squadrons" reveals French veterans of the wars in Indochina and Algeria provided the inspiration, the training, and some of the intelligence that enables Latin American dictators to torture and kill thousands of its own citizens. Filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin traces the development of the theory of counter-revolutionary warfare, first tested in Indochina and in Algiers (where 20,000 civilians died). Some of its foremost practitioners, like French General Paul Aussaresses, freely admit their contributions, even with a hint of pride. Others are surreptitiously captured on a hidden camera, admitting high-level political and military links between the dictators and the French government. Many of those interviewed are either now in custody or under indictment. "Death Squadrons" serves a cautionary role about what happens when government and the military are convinced that enemies are everywhere, and that any means necessary can be employed to fight them. It's an important lesson as the war on terror continues. 2003.

Title: Salvador Allende
Mediatype: DVD and Video
Description: Using rare archival footage, family photos, and interviews with friends, colleagues, relatives, as well as workers, journalists, his personal secretary and Edward Korry, former U.S. Ambassador to Chile, "Salvador Allende" portrays the life, times and political formation of the Valparaiso-born doctor. The film focuses on the tumultuous three years following Allende's election, and the declaration of his socialist program, "la via chilena," which nationalized large-scale industries and began an agrarian reform program. Former U.S. Ambassador Korry provides an insider's account of President Nixon and Henry Kissinger's determination to thwart Allende, but he is unrepentant about the CIA-sponsored coup that overthrew the Chilean government. In a lively debate, former UP militants argue over Allende's failure to defend the government, especially his failure to arm and mobilize a people's militia as a counterforce to the army, in the period leading up to the coup. "Salvador Allende also reveals little-known, more intimate aspects of the man, with moving personal reminiscences of his sense of humor, his remarkable energy, personal charisma and popular political appeal. Through archival footage and eyewitness and participant accounts, the film re-creates the military assault on the Moneda, Allende's last radio broadcast to the people of Chile, and rare photos and footage documenting the final actions of Allende and his staff on that day, including his suicide. Guzmán's personalized voice-over commentary provides a compelling narrative thread for this political biography, one which, in his attempt to understand the impact of Allende on his own life and his nation's political history, also serves to illuminate this controversial and inspirational public figure for an international audience. Directed by Patricio Guzmán. 2004.

Title: Floating Market

Description: For many decades, hundreds of Venezuelan men in search of economic opportunity have sailed forty miles across the Caribbean from Venezuela to the island of Curaçao in small wooden boats to sell tropical fruits and vegetables in Curaçao's floating market, leaving behind their families in the coastal fishing villages of Venezuela for months at a time. Continuing a tradition passed down from father to son for generations, they form a Venezuelan community along the quays of downtown Willemstad, capital of Curaçao. They have created a vibrant and enduring market culture in Curaçao that helps support the Venezuelan villages, while providing fresh produce to this arid island. Floating Market follows the stories of several sailors and their families, from the perilous nighttime crossing, through the months the men spend living on their boats and selling produce to locals and tourists, to their joyful homecomings. The men come as itinerant workers to this Dutch island. They are a part of Curaçao, yet set apart by language, customs, and culture. They form a brotherhood in Curaçao that gives them a sense of home and community, while they maintain ties with their families in Venezuela via supply boats that arrive daily to restock the boats with fresh produce, and to bring news, letters, and packages from home. Meanwhile, in Venezuela, the men's wives run their households and raise their children alone without the support of their husbands during the eight months of the year that the men are away. Title: A Defender of His People: The Legend of El Tepozteco
Mediatype: DVD & Video
Description: The Indian village of Tepoztlán, just south of Mexico City, is a major tourist destination and a site for second homes of wealthy Mexico City residents. In spite of these pressures, Tepoztlán has kept its special identity. The town's main tourist destination is the pyramid above the town, home of the god Tepoztecatl ("El Tepozteco" in Spanish). Though the locals, or "tepoztecos" are officially Christian, they say "When we are in trouble, we call on El Tepozteco, because he is our warrior spirit. But when it is time to go to heaven, we turn to the Almighty." In 1995, a multinational corporation announced a huge development, with a golf course, 700 luxury homes, an industrial park, and a shopping center. Rather than face this threat to their identity, the tepoztecos barricaded the town and fought the project to a standstill. At the forefront of this "Golf Club War" was El Tepozteco. Many say he personally led the defense of the barricades, even driving away a federal SWAT team. Certainly, his spirit, and his legend, served as a rallying cry for his people and helped them successfully defy the combined might of a multinational corporation and the Mexican state. The video also includes a bonus feature "The Language of the Seeds" (20 minutes). Every year, the market vendors of Tepoztlán create an amazing arch, made entirely of edible seeds, on the gateway to the parish church. Using the pictorial language of their Indian ancestors, each arch comments on the events of the year. These unique arches attract visitors from all over the world, and bring the people of Tepoztlán together as a community.

Description: The Mapuche people of South America survived conquest by the Incas and the Spanish, as well as assimilation by the state of Chile. But will they survive the construction of the Ralco hydroelectric power station? When ENDESA, a multinational company with roots in Spain, began the project in 1997, Mapuche families living along the Biobío River were offered land, animals, tools, and relocation assistance in return for the voluntary exchange of their land. However, many refused to leave; some alleged that they had been marooned in the Andean hinterlands with unsafe housing and, ironically, no electricity. Those who remained claim they have been sold out for progress; that Chile's Indigenous Law has been flouted by then-president Eduardo Frei, that Mapuches protesting the Ralco station have been rounded up and prosecuted for arson and conspiracy under Chile's anti-terrorist legislation, and that many have been forced into hiding to avoid unfair trials with dozens of anonymous informants testifying against them. Description: Prepare for the journey as an unknown, a nothing, no one. Prepare to leave everything from South and Central America behind and travel alone with a vague sense of direction and the echo of your family left in your ears. Prepare to face the same intimidation and corruptive danger in Mexico as you will eventually find 1,300 miles north, when you cross the United States-if you live through it. As rich nations sharpen their borders and differences, the poorest peoples continue to blur them in the search for liberties too universally held to be claimed by any flag. Through this burning hunger, we are drawn into De Nadie, and through its intimate lens and enduring crew, we find ourselves confronted with a story of immigration we only thought we understood. These personal stories force a deeper understanding of the United States border crisis, while exposing hypocrisies in a Mexican culture faced with equally uncomfortable intolerance of its own. All this from a film that doesn't take political stances; it merely brings us the voices of those affected, the results of which are far louder. Title: Goodbye Baby
Mediatype: DVD and Video
Description: The number of adoptions from Guatemala to the US has risen dramatically in recent years - as has the controversy. What is seen as an act of love by adoptive parents is viewed with suspicion inside Guatemala, and the film examines the ramifications that money, private lawyers, media coverage and women's rights have on the adoption process. Informed by the filmmaker's own experiences - she's the mother of two children adopted from Guatemala, where she's lived on and off during the past 25 years - 'Goodbye Baby' provides an insightful look into the dramatic and sometimes difficult world of intercountry adoption.
