Annual Stone Center for Latin American Studies Award Ceremony

The annual Awards Ceremony, presented by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, is conducted in recognition of Latinamericanist students and professors for their hard work and scholarship.


The Pebbles Center Inauguration Ceremony

In an effort to expand community awareness about Latin America, the Stone Center is leading an initiative in the New Orleans Public Library that places a resource in one of the branches. This resource center, or Pebbles, will offer books and multimedia items, as well as community events related to Latin America.


Caribbean Soundscapes: A Conference on Caribbean Musics and Culture
>>March 12-14, 2004

Popular music has often been singled out as a central defining characteristic of the Caribbean imaginary. This conference responds to the need to expand our scholarly paradigms in this area, recognizing intense regional transnationalization and change in the region in recent years.
Speakers and participants will address several key questions: what is the significance of the Caribbean as a specific locale for the production and circulation of popular music? What role does popular music play in the creation and continued performance of national identities throughout the circum-Caribbean and other zones, such as continental Latin America, northern North America, and Europe?


Reinventing Carnival in the Americas

Fred Góes presented "Reinventing Carnival in the Americas," a lecture complimenting the
on-going exhibit on the same theme curated by Fred and Graça Góes. The exhibit will be open February 6-26, 2004 in the Latin American Library located on the fourth floor of the Howard Tilton Memorial Library. Admission is free of charge. This event is open to the public.


The Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowship

Under the aegis of Tulane University in New Orleans, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Deep South Regional Humanities Center are co-hosting a fellowship program sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation to study creativity and performance in the Mississippi-Gulf-Caribbean region.


Second Annual Maya Symposium and Workshop 2003

Tulane University has a long history of archaeological research in the Northern Maya Lowlands. We invite you to join archaeologists and specialists in hieroglyphic decipherment for a series of lectures, discussions, and workshops focusing on recent discoveries about the Classic Period (A.D. 250-900) of this area.


Working Meeting of Outreach Coordinators/Directors in Latin American Studies

The Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) and the Stone Center for Latin American Studies at Tulane University co-hosted a meeting for all Latin American National Resource Center Outreach Coordinators/Directors. This meeting took place at Tulane University on May 9-10, 2003.


Excellence in Latin American Studies Awards-Spring Awards Ceremony

This event recognized the four Best Paper prize winners, Best Graduate Faculty and Best Undergraduate Faculty as selected by the appropriate student constituencies. Also, the Stone Center recognized its best Teaching Assistant, and its outstanding graduate and undergraduate student leaders.
