Writing

Definition

Writing Courses and Writing Practica.
The Writing Requirement of the colleges will be satisfied by taking one writing course of either of the two following kinds: (1) a four-credit course officially designated as a W course; (2) a one-credit Writing Practicum attached to a regular three-credit course - that is, to a three-credit course not itself approved as a W course. In this case, taking the Practicum with the course constitutes fulfillment of the college W requirement. The course taken without the Practicum section does not.

Writing courses of either kind must be approved by the LAS Curriculum Committee, which will maintain a list of such courses. Enrollment in either the Writing course or the Writing Practicum will normally require permission of the instructor and be limited to twenty students.

Students enrolled in writing courses and practica must complete a total of 5000 words (approximately 20 pages) which may be one project or several. Additionally, at least one or more projects totaling 2500 words must be completely revised based on detailed evaluation of the course instructor.

Writing Practica are self-contained courses that extend or parallel the subject matter and the writing assignments offered in the course to which they are appended. At the instructor's discretion a writing practicum may be either optional or required of all students in the course.

English 101 or equivalent is a prerequisite to enrollment in courses that meet the writing requirment.

The language of the writing requirement may be English in a writing course at any level or with the approval of the instructor it may be a foreign language in a writing course at the 300-level and above.

Courses With Writing Intensive Practicum

Courses may have a writing intensive practicum attached. For a course with a writing intensive practicum, you must register for both the course and the practicum to fulfill the writing intensive requirement. Practicum courses are usually 288, 388, 488, or 688. Refer to the section of Writing Intensive Courses in the Schedule of Classes for the approved courses and practica being offered during the semester.
