Chair's Welcome | |||||||||||||
Welcome to the web site of the English Department at Tulane University. Here you will find information about the various courses and programming offered through the department, professional biographies of our faculty and descriptions of our undergraduate and graduate courses of study. We strive to offer a stimulating intellectual experience to our students and we hope that you can sense at least some of the energy of our classrooms on this web site. In addition to highlighting our current projects, you will also be able to browse through some of our archived events and activities. The English Department at Tulane has had a long history of faculty and student excellence. Over the past decade our faculty have published books--often award-winning--with major national and international presses such as the University of Chicago Press, University of Pennsylvania Press, Harvard University Press, Duke University Press, University of Massachusetts Press, Southern Illinois University Press and Rutgers University Press, to name only a few. Our Creative Writers have received national and international recognition for their work and are regularly invited to do readings in a number of prestigious venues. The excellence of our faculty has been recognized through a number of awards including multiple awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Fulbright Lecturerships, awards from the American Philosophical Society, the Newberry Library, the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Louisiana Board of Regents, the Mississippi Humanities Center and the Rockefeller Institute in Bellagio, Italy. Likewise, our students and alumni have excelled in their chosen vocations. At the graduate level, our doctoral students have gone on to have successful careers as tenure-track faculty members in institutions such as Smith College, Baylor University, the University of South Carolina, Temple University, University of Mississippi, University of Alberta and the University of Florida. They too have published important scholarly work in major peer-reviewed journals in their respective fields and published their books with highly regarded presses. Our undergraduates have often gone on to graduate doctoral programs at other institutions or pursued the M.F.A. in creative writing. Many have gone on to become lawyers, doctors or successful politicians and entrepreneurs. As incoming Chair of the Department I have made it a personal priority to renew our relationships with our alumni. We at Tulane want to know where you are and what you have gone on to do with your careers and lives. If you are visiting us through this web site, do drop me a note (Gaurav@tulane.edu) to tell us about your whereabouts. If you are visiting New Orleans, do call or come by my office for a cup of coffee! With warm regards,
Gaurav Desai
