A new stand-alone major in environmental studies now exists in the School of Liberal Arts; it replaces the old coordinate major in environmental studies. The Environmental Studies Program undertook a revitalization of the curriculum during 2007. Courses are from both the previous curriculum and many new courses are drawn from throughout the university; the environmental studies major is an interdisciplinary major. With courses from departments ranging from within the School of Liberal Arts, School of Sciences and Engineering, School of Public Health, School of Business, and School of Architecture, the environmental studies major (EVST) is a coherent and definitive compilation of the university’s wide range of environmental concentration courses. Under the guidance of Director William Balée (Anthropology), and the faculty advisory committee, including Professors Barbara Hayley (Theatre and Dance), Katharine Jack (Anthropology), Amy Koritz (English), Grant S. McCall (Anthropology), James Mackin (Communication), Christopher B. Rodning (Anthropology), and Richard Watts (French and Italian), the major has been designed to not only provide ample opportunity for students’ interdisciplinary educational development, but also various opportunities for further enrichment and knowledge of key environmental and humanistic concerns. Through internships, a required senior colloquium, courses through several of Tulane’s most prestigious schools and colleges, along with opportunities for independent study and honors thesis, the program hopes to provide its majors with a conclusive, comprehensive undergraduate liberal arts education in environmental studies. Students previously declared under the coordinate major, or the minor, in environmental studies, will be able to continue along those paths, or switch to the new stand-alone major.
