Undergraduate Students Applying for Aid

2008-09 General Requirements
Undergraduate students applying to or enrolled in a full-time division at Tulane University (Newcomb-Tulane College, School of Architecture, A.B. Freeman School of Business, School of Liberal Arts, School of Science and Engineering) must complete the 2008-2009 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the 2008-2009 College Scholarship Services (CSS) Financial Aid Profile to be considered for financial aid during the 2008-2009 academic year. Students who only file the FAFSA will be considered for federal aid only. Students who file the FAFSA and the CSS Profile will be considered for both federal and institutional aid.

Students can complete the FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Students who choose to complete their FAFSA online will need to register with the Department of Education for a PIN. Students who complete the FAFSA online MUST electronically sign their application OR print out, sign, and mail the "Signature Page" to the Central Processor; the application will not be processed until one form of signature is received. Tulane's school code for the FAFSA is 002029.

Students can register for and complete the CSS Financial Aid Profile application online at www.collegeboard.com and selecting "Paying for College" on student's home page . Tulane's school code for the CSS Profile is 6832.

Application Deadlines for Incoming Students
The 2008-2009 FAFSA can only be completed after January 1, 2008. Incoming students should submit the FAFSA before February 15, 2008 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives the report from the processor by February 28, 2008.

Applicants must submit the PROFILE Application Packet to College Scholarship Service by February 15, 2008 (earlier in the fall if possible).

Application Deadlines for Returning Students
Students who completed the 2007-2008 FAFSA should automatically receive notification that they can fill out the Renewal FAFSA online and a renewal PIN number to process their FAFSA for the 2008-2009 academic year. Undergraduate students who do not receive a renewal PIN by February 28, 2008 should contact the Department of Education for a new PIN.

The 2008-2009 FAFSA can only be completed after January 1, 2008. Returning students should submit the FAFSA before April 15, 2008 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives the report from the processor by May 1, 2008.

Returning students should also complete the PROFILE by April 15, 2008 to ensure that the Financial Aid Office receives PROFILE information by May 1, 2008. This year, students must submit signed copies of their parents' complete 2007 federal tax return, their 2007 federal tax return, and their parents' 2007 W-2 forms to the Office of Financial Aid. You may send in copies of your signed documents to: Tulane University Office of Financial Aid, 205 Science & Engineering Lab Complex, New Orleans, LA 70118. You may also choose to fax the documents to our office at 504.862.8750. Please make sure that the student's name and social security number are clearly marked on the documents and that the tax returns are properly signed. Failure to do so may cause considerable delay in processing your application. Students and parents who were not required to file 2007 tax returns must complete and submit the appropriate 2008-2009 Non-Filer Form.

Status of FAFSA Application
Students can verify that their online application was received immediately after it is submitted by returning to the FAFSA main page and selecting "Check my submitted FAFSA". The online status allows students to check the status of their application from initial submission to processed Student Aid Report (SAR). Students with a PIN can also access their processed EFC. Students can also call FAFSA on the Web Customer Service at 800.801.0576 and perform an automatic status check over the phone.

Students can verify that their paper application was received by contacting the Department of Education at 800.433.3243. This automated system allows students to check the status of their application or corrections and even allows students to request duplicate copies of the Student Aid Report (SAR). Students must call from a touch-tone phone to utilize this service and press #1 to select this feature.

Verification Requirements
Some applicants are selected by the federal processor for verification of information submitted on the FAFSA. Students selected will be notified by mail. In most cases, the prior year's federal tax return (2007 income tax return for the 2008-2009 academic year) is used to verify the information. If the applicant did not keep copies of their tax returns, they can contact the Internal Revenue Service for a copy. The IRS has established a site that provides online copies of tax forms as well as answers to frequently asked questions.

Students and parents who did not earn enough in 2007 to file a federal tax return can complete either the 2008-2009 Student Non-Filer Certification form or the 2008-2009 Parent non-Filer Certification form.

Additional documents may be requested depending on the information to be verified. Some applicants may need to provide verification of Social Security benefits received by their family. Others may need to provide verification of their Social Security number. Still others may need to provide documentation of the type and amount of their Veteran's education benefits.
