Peer Health Advocates is a group of students committed to providing information to students about health-related issues through outreach programs, workshops, health fairs, and campus awareness weeks. New Peer Health Advocates are required to attend a training retreat in early September. Peer Health Advocates must also participate in a minimum number of programs per semester plus help plan, assist, and execute larger programs such as campus awareness weeks, as well as give Student Health Center (Uptown) workshops.

 Criteria to become a Peer Health Advocate:  

  • Non-judgmental attitude towards people of all races, ethnicity, religions, gender, sexual orientation and physical abilities.

 

  • Awareness and sensitivity of issues and concerns related to sexuality, AIDS, STDs, nutrition, sexual assault, alcohol and other drugs.

 

  • Willingness to volunteer time to educating university community.

 

  • Participation in training sessions.

 

  • Effective communication and organizational skills as well as demonstrated leadership abilities. Peer Health Advocates must be assertive and be able to speak easily in front of a group of peers on sensitive topics.

 

  • Good academic standing.
