ALCOHOL AND SUBSTANCE USE

SPIN THE BOTTLE Spin the Bottle offers an indispensable critique of the role that contemporary popular culture plays in glamorizing excessive drinking and high-risk behaviors. Award-winning media critics Jackson Katz and Jean Kilbourne contrast these distorted representations with the often disturbing and dangerous ways that alcohol consumption affects the lives of real young men and women. By exploring the college party scene, Spin the Bottle shows the difficulties students have in navigating a cultural environment saturated with messages about gender and alcohol. Interviews with campus health professionals provide a clear picture of how drinking impacts student health and academic performance, but it is the students’ own experiences and reflections that tell the real story behind alcohol’s alluring public image.  DURATION: 45 minutes MEDIA EDUCATION FOUNDATION.

ANATOMY OF DESIRE What makes one person gay, another straight? A quirk of genetics? Family life? Adolescent or early adult experience? Anatomy of Desire examines how science and social politics have shaped our notions of homosexuality through history. Using rare archival footage--from '60s drag artists and Stonewall activists to filmed psychotherapeutic "treatment" for homosexuality--the film exposes the joy and pain of a community barraged by outside efforts to define, control and sometimes even to eradicate it.  With style and wit, Anatomy of Desire dishes the dirt on the historically rocky relationship between medical science, society and sexuality. DURATION: 47 minutes.  NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA.

FOR BETTER OR FOR WORSE: SAME-SEX MARRIAGE IN AMERICA  It is one of the most compelling social and legal battles of recent years. Three gay couples in Hawaii challenged the marriage laws that say couples must be heterosexual on grounds of discrimination and won.   Join Bill Kurtis for a point-by-point examination of the landmark case and the divisive nationwide debate it has inspired. Gay rights activists claim this ruling merely gives same-sex couples the same rights as those granted to all other citizens, while conservative opponents say it strikes at the very heart of American morality and family values. ROLE REVERSAL From the moment they are born, men and women exhibit the characteristics of their sex--looking, thinking and acting differently. But exactly what are these differences, and how do they manifest themselves? Role Reversal seeks to answer some of these questions by having ordinary men and women switch genders for a month, experiencing life as spies from behind the other side of the wall between the sexes.   With the help of a team of experts, Role Reversal transformed Starla, a 40-year-old woman's rights activist, Ryan, a 22-year-old college graduate, Tye, a 27-year-old playwright, and Ary, a 31-year-old professional trainer. For one month, they lived together in a Manhattan apartment and shared their experiences as members of the opposite sex. From the "sexual identity boot camp" that taught them how to pass as men and women to the encounters that highlighted the differences that define daily life for each sex, Role Reversal chronicles every important moment of their experiment in a fascinating, feature film.

TRANSGENDER REVOLUTION What does it mean to be a man or woman? In America's growing transsexual community, this question takes on a whole new and powerful meaning.  Investigative ReportsTM goes beyond ignorance and stereotypes for an intimate portrayal of the people who choose to change their sexuality. Among the unexpected, ferociously articulate characters we meet are a female-to-male transsexual who works for the Tampa sheriff's office, a male-to-female electrical designer who has hosted an MIT radio show called Gendertalk, and a Southern good-old-boy who we follow through his surgical transformation. The Transgender Revolution also examines the fast-growing movement to combat gender oppression, highlighting the nation's most notorious transsexual killings and a Congressional battle over including transsexuals in the Hate Crimes Act.  Featuring interviews with the founder of the transsexual political organization GenderPAC and a noted neurosurgeon specializing in sex change operations, this is a surprising portrayal of a misunderstood, growing subculture.

SEX IN THE 20 TH CENTURY  Part 1: THE CENTURY TURNS ON Did you know that the term “date” was first used in 1896 as a lower class slang word for prostitution?  Or that the vibrator was in fact one of the top five electrical appliances of the early part of the century and first only used in doctors’ offices as a way to cure women’s sexual fantasies?  Men were allowed to embrace their sexuality and visit brothels and red light districts, while women who yearned for this freedom were held back by the fear of unwanted pregnancy.  It was the advent of birth control, introduced by Margaret Sanger, which allowed American women for the first time to be in control of their sexuality.  World War I catapulted the sexual revolution by sending women to the workforce and allowing them to remove their corsets.  Men returned from war ready to seize the moment and not hold back.  Rules were changing and the story of boy meets girl would never be the same.  The twentieth century’s arrival revealed changed in America’s sexuality that no floor length skirt could hide.  DURATION: 45 minutes.  THE HISTORY CHANNEL.

SEX IN THE 20TH CENTURY  Part 2: PASSIONS COMING OF AGE An adventurous generation came of age in the topsy-turvy ‘20s and cast off the inhibitions of their parents.  It was the time of experimentation, the Flapper girl, Freud, and the new invention of the latex condom.  Sex turned from an act of procreation to an act of recreation.  The depression of the 1930s caused the sexual lives of Americans to wane due to the fact that many could not afford marriages, children, or even to live alone. However, war aphrodisia set in and sex was unleashed with vigor.  Over eighty-five percent of soldiers reported having sex overseas and Victory Girls pleasured men in the name of patriotism.  However, the country could not handle this sexual explosion after the war, as unfaithful men returned to marriages and women were forced from their work back into the home.  Instead of embracing life like the post WWI generation, Americans sought to regain control.  At the conclusion of the ‘40s, skirt lengths were going down instead of up.

DURATION: 45 minutes.  THE HISTORY CHANNEL.

---------------------------------

SEX IN THE 20TH CENTURY  Part 3: MAKE LOVE NOT WAR The Cold War placed a freeze on the evolving sexual revolution.  Women who worked during WWII returned to the household to fulfill “June Cleaver” type roles.  During this time of conformity, sexual deviants were considered Communists and anti-Patriotic.  Slowly, rock ‘n roll introduced dancing which involved swinging of the hips and Hugh Hefner published his controversial magazine Playboy, however it was the introduction of the birth control pill that truly revived the sexual revolution.  The 60s introduced the mini-skirt, topless bathing suits, and X rated movies.  In spite of this, women were being expelled from colleges for living with men and the police was raiding gay bars.  This film is factual yet interesting.  DURATION: 45 minutes.  THE HISTORY CHANNEL.

---------------------------------

SEX IN THE 20TH CENTURY  Part 4: POLITICS OF PLEASURE The conclusion to this documentary series begins with a look at the free and promiscuous ‘70s, which preached the pursuit of better sex and bigger orgasms and follows the ‘80s that brought Americans the case of the preacher versus the pornographer in the trial involving Reverend Jerry Falwell and Hustler creator Larry Flynt.  The 1990s steamed things up with the invention of cybersex and the tiny blue pill, Viagra.  Ironically, when Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders advocated masturbation in 1993 when the highest rate of teen HIV was documented in history, President Clinton fired her for indecency.  It was only five years later that he would force people to question whether oral sex was indeed sex or just foreplay.  Today, we are more tolerant of differences, but are still dealing with out of date laws that make oral sex illegal in some states.  Sex is just as controversial as it was in the beginning of the century.  DURATION: 45 minutes.  THE HISTORY CHANNEL.

SEXUAL ATTRACTION:  THE UNEXPLAINED Sexual attraction is confusing, maddening, euphoric and even dangerous. It is, like love, an intangible essence. We can examine it only through its physical symptoms--the beating pulse, the sweating palms, the rise and fall of chemicals in the brain--all part of the unexplained emotion of infatuation.   Through real-life cases and interviews with psychologists, biologists, anthropologists and others, Sexual Attraction explores the mysteries of human sexuality. If the urge for sex can be traced to the need to procreate, then how can we explain homosexual love? What forces are at work when a couple truly fall in love at first sight? Is monogamy the only way to have a successful relationship, and if so, why do so many marriages end in divorce? Just what are pheromones anyway? With insight and humor, these questions and others are explored in this compelling program.  We've all heard of pheromones. But what exactly are they and how do they work? And can they really make someone fall in love?

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY: LOVE CHRONICLES This film takes a long, hard look at the scientific basis of attraction, romance and true love. Romantics may find it a little painful, but the chemical and biological signals that we all give off play a significant role in the how we choose partners. Here, experts reveal their findings and what they tell us about ourselves. Discover how these subliminal signals can be manipulated and exploited, and find out about the psychology behind our "love maps." And if you've ever wondered why you are attracted to a certain "type," the answer is here.  It may not be romantic, but Sexual Chemistry is undeniably a major component of romance.
