Scholarships for Seniors

Rhodes Scholarship

For study at Oxford Universities, England. Two year appointment, possible 3rd. Seeks individuals with superior academic achievement and proven intellect who will be world leaders. Field – practically any Oxford BA, more limited for higher degrees. Pays tuition and fees, maintenance and travel allowance. This scholarship requires a very rigorous interview.

If interested, contact the Honors Office no later than May 1 of the year you wish to apply for application submission in October of that year. This scholarship requires an institutional endorsement, which is done through the Honors Program. (Applications can be obtained by e-mail, written request or through the HP).

Marshall Scholarship

For two years of study at most institutions of higher education in Great Britain. Fields – practically any. This scholarship, also, seeks individuals of superior achievement and leadership potential. Pays tuition and fees, maintenance and travel allowance. This scholarship requires a very rigorous interview. Institutional endorsement by HP necessary. Application deadline is October 4.

This application is entirely online. Since institutional endorsement is required you must contact the Honors Program Office no later than May of the year you wish to apply for application submission in October.

Churchill Scholarship

This scholarship has changed some of the rules. Please see the Honors office for details. The Churchill Scholarship is now among the most generous of the prestigious scholarships. It includes the following: (a) all University and College fees, which vary by program and department, but which average about $25,000 at the current rate of exchange; (b) a living stipend of £10,000 for nine-month programs and £12,000 for the twelve-month programs; (c) a travel allowance of up to $1,000 for roundtrip economy airfare from the United States to the United Kingdom and visa fees; and (d) eligibility to apply for an additional Special Research Grant of up to $2,000.

Applications are due in the Honors Program office no later than September 15 of the year you wish to apply. The deadline for receipt at the Institute of International Education is November. Do not send applications directly to the Foundation.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program will award approximately 35 scholarships to college seniors or recent graduates to attend graduate programs in fall 2008. The scholarship awards will provide funding for tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for the length of the graduate degree program, up to six years. The amount and duration of awards will vary by student, based on the cost of attendance and length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum award per student is $50,000 per year.

This scholarship requires institutional endorsement. Candidates may not apply directly to the Foundation for this program. Please see the Guidelines for more details. If you have questions after reviewing the materials, call 1-800-498-6478.

The internal deadline for submission to the Honors Program is January 15, 2008. The application deadline is March 14, 2008.

George Mitchell Scholarship

A relatively new scholarship, which provides all expenses for one year of study in Ireland. You can have any major – graduate, professional – law and medicine and you can study at any of the Irish universities. Institutional endorsement required. Application deadline has passed for the 2008-2009 scholarship.

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship For New Americans

30 scholarships will be awarded each year to new Americans who are resident aliens, naturalized citizens, or the children of two naturalized citizens. Any field of study. Seeks applicants who are creative, committed to accomplishments and to the values of the U.S. constitution and bill of rights. Recipients receive $20,000 each year for 2 years plus one-half of tuition.

Application deadline is November 1, 2007.

Institutional endorsement is required along with scores from any graduate aptitude test. You must take the early test in order that the scores will be received in December.

Jacob Javits

For individuals going into graduate school in the fine arts, humanities and social sciences. Pays a living stipend of up to $15,000 for up to 4 years, plus tuition. (This is variable.) Applications should be available by August. Check further with this office and online.

Luce Scholars Program

Seeks individuals who will be leaders in their fields – people with stellar records and great visions. Spend one year working in a mentored relationship in Asia. This is NOT for Asian majors or people acquainted with this area. We can nominate two individuals and institutional endorsement is required.

National Science Foundation and Howard Hughes Fellowship

These are wonderful scholarships for people doing graduate work in the sciences. They pay tuition, fees, and a nice living allowance of $30,000 for 12 months tenure with up to 3 years of graduate study. 1000 awards will be made. Both applications can be obtained at the following web site. GRE required. NSF deadlines vary depending on fellowship. Please see the web site below. Howard Hughes Fellowship deadline is January 11, 2007.

Gates Cambridge Scholarships

The Gates Cambridge Trust intends to offer a substantial number of awards annually, which will cover the costs of studying at Cambridge for scholars of outstanding academic merit and leadership potential from every country of the world other than the United Kingdom. These scholarships are designed for students who are committed to serving their communities, and who gain admission to the University of Cambridge to pursue courses of study as follows: second Bachelor degree as an affiliated student, one-year postgraduate courses, or research leading to the degree of Ph.D. Application materials should be submitted and received no later than October 15 of the year you wish to apply.

Truman Scholarship

Juniors interested in public service. Need a 3.5+, excellent track record in public service. For graduate school ($30,000) in some instances can be used in law school. Institutional endorsement by HP necessary. Application must be received in the Honors Office by November 30, 2007. Applications to Truman are due February 5, 2008.

Beinecke Scholarship

Not for sciences. Thirty thousand dollars for graduate school. Must have financial need and be near the top of your class. Institutional endorsement by HP necessary. Application must be received in the Honors office by January 15, 2008. March 1, 2008 is the deadline for receipt of all nominations.

Scholarships for Sophomores & Juniors

Goldwater Scholarships

For sophomore and juniors who want to make a career doing scientific research (not medicine). Up to $7,500 per year. Candidates need good grades and research experience. Institutional endorsement by HP necessary. Application must be received at the HP office by November 30, 2007. Submission online is January 31, 2008. All supporting documents must be received by February 1, 2008.

Udall Scholarship

For sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers relating to the enviornment, or who intend to pursue careers in tribal public policy or Native American health care and are Native American or Alaska Native. GPA 3.0+ and strong service in environmental area. Institutional endorsement by HP necessary. Materials available in October for download from website.
