Copper:  This cubic closest packed structure shows the ABCABC... pattern of packed spheres.  The unit cell is face centered cubic.

Gold:  Gold shows a hexagonal closest packed structure with an ABABAB... repeating pattern.

Rock Salt (NaCl):  The NaCl structure consists of closest packed Cl- ions with the Na+ ions filling the octahedral holes.  The coordination numbers of both the Na+ and Cl- ions is six.

Wurtzite (ZnS):  This lattice consists of hexagonal closest packed sulfide ions with the Zinc ions occupying 1/2 of the tetrahedral holes.

Zinc blende (ZnS):  This polytrope of ZnS consists of cubic closest packed sulfide ions (contrast to hexagonal closest packed in Wurtzite).  The zinc ions again fill 1/2 of the tetrahedral holes.

Fluorite (CaF2):  In fluorite, it is the cation (Ca2+) which forms a cubic closest packed layer.  The flouride ions fill all of the tetrahedral holes.  The coordination number of Ca2+ is eight.

Rutile (TiO2):  The rutile structure consists of hexagonal closest packed oxygen atoms with the Ti4+ ions occupying 1/2 of the octahedral holes.  Notice the coordination number of Ti4+ is six and that of oxygen is three.

CsCl Latice:  The CsCl latice is based on a body centered cubic unit cell (either Cs+ in the middle of 8 Cl- ions or Cl- in the middle of 8 Cs+ ions).   Consequently, the coordination number of each ion is eight.

CsCl Unit Cell: Unit cell showing Cs+ in the middle of a cube surrounded by four chloride ions.
