Computing Labs:  Lab Assistant

Consult with Tulane faculty, staff, and students about all aspects of computing at Tulane, including: technical aspects of software and operating systems (UNIX, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Windows). 

Manage the operation of the Computing Resource Distribution Station (RDS) 

  • Distribute computer printouts and documentation. 
  • Monitor and maintain functioning printers, including toner changing, replenishing paper supply (involves carrying 15lb. Boxes of paper)
  • Observe print queues. 

Manage the operation of the temporary classroom complex (TCC) room 010 and Willow Lab

  • Open the room for use by Tulane University Students.
  • Shut down the room
  • Secure the room by locking the door and arming the alarm
  • Rotate checking labs in Willow, TCC10, NewComb202 and Bogg 102

Monitor functioning of PCs, printers. 

Commitment to quality customer service.

Arrive for work in a timely consistent manner. 

Assist Academic Technology Support Services Consultants as required.

Perform other duties as requested.


Computing Labs:  Student Supervisor

Consult with Tulane faculty, staff, and students about all aspects of computing at Tulane, including: technical aspects of hardware, software and operating systems (UNIX, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Windows). 

Manage the operation of the Computing Resource Distribution Station (RDS) 

  • Distribute computer printouts and documentation.

  • Observe print queues.

  • Open the room for use by Tulane University Faculty, Staff and Students.
  • Shut down the room
  • Secure the room after hours.

Lab Upkeep

  • Student supervisor will ensure that the computer labs are open and attended at the proper times.
  • Make sure all labs are stocked with paper, toner, and other supplies as needed.
  • To check the labs throughout the day and trouble-shoot as necessary.
  • To ensure the Lab Assistants are able to do their job to the best of their ability.
  • To see that all labs are closed and locked properly on their designated day of duty.
  • To be available and in touch with Lab Assistants.

Working with the Lab Assistants

  • Mentor the lab assistants and guide them in their continued development of skills. Track their progress, and provide feedback to the supervisors on their timeliness, development, and progress on an ongoing basis.
  • Warn and, if necessary, write up any Lab Assistant who has neglected to follow the guidelines.
  • Work with students to settle any personnel issues with coworkers or customers.
  • Offer a sympathetic ear and confidentiality.
  • Treat every worker in a fair, equal, and impartial way.
  • Work to resolve any scheduling or work-related problems. Schedule shifts.
  • Act as a bridge between the lab assistants and the lab supervisors as related to issues and problems that may come up.

Working with the Lab Supervisors

  • Meet with the lab supervisors once a week to discuss any problems and learn any important information to pass down to the Lab Assistants.
  • Report any problems with machines, software, or workers and offer suggestions for corrections.

Student Supervisor will act as on-call supervisor.

On-Call Duties

  • Carry a key to open the Computing Lab at all times.
  • Make sure that whoever needs a key as one to either open of close the lab
  • Open or close the Lab in the event that the lab is operating on reduced hours and lab assistants aren’t able to track down the key from Mamie.
  • Find replacements for absent workers if either lab is left completely without a lab assistant on duty.
  • Contact Lab Supervisors about any emergency incidents or whenever TUPD needed to be called.

Assist Academic Technology Support Services Consultants as required.

Perform other duties as requested.

Student Supervisors are expected to follow all the policies and procedures set forth for Lab Assistants.


On-site Services:  Technician

Consult with Tulane faculty, staff, and students about all aspects of computing at Tulane, including: technical aspects of hardware, software and operating systems (UNIX, MS-DOS, Macintosh and Windows). 

Monitor functioning of terminals, MS-DOS, , PCs and printers within the ATSS computing labs.

Ability to adapt and learn new technologies. 

Commitment to quality customer service.

Arrive for work in a timely consistent manner. 

Assist Academic Technology Support Services Consultants as required. 

Perform other duties as requested.

Classroom & Media: Media Assistant I

  • Deliver audio-visual and presentation equipment to classrooms and other campus facilities
  • Setup and operate audio-visual and presentation equipment
  • Assist in on-going equipment and facility maintenance activities
  • Participate in media production activities

Requirements

  • Willingness to learn to use, troubleshoot, and maintain instructional technology equipment
  • Demonstrated responsible in all matters
  • Unfailingly punctual to work and to delivery assignments
  • Always polite, professional, and helpful to instructors and other users
  • Able and willing to carry equipment across campus and up flights of stairs
  • Ability to drive electric cart safely and courteously

Duties

  • Consult with Tulane faculty and staff with all aspects of media and instructional technology including: data/video projectors (portable and installed); computer integration with a projector; DVD, VHS and other media players; still and video cameras; scanners, etc.
  • Arrive for assigned shift on-time and prepared to work
  • Deliver and retrieve equipment from classrooms punctually and professionally
  • Monitor the daily delivery schedule and remain aware of all delivery and retrieval activities while on-duty
  • Assist classroom instructors by professionally and politely setting up and/or demonstrating classroom media equipment
  • Respond to “emergency” requests for classroom technology assistance
  • Support professional staff in on-going maintenance activities
  • Adhere to all applicable safety and road regulations while operating the departmental electric cart
  • Maintain security awareness at all times by never leaving equipment unattended, by reporting all damage to equipment and facilities, and by closing, locking and arming secure areas when appropriate
  • Assist Academic Technology Support Services professional staff with all other duties, as requested
