I. Read the "Inaugural Address" and "Initial Problems at Forts Pickens and Sumter" sections in the Crisis at Fort Sumter program.

II. Write an essay of no more than three pages responding to the problem posed at the end of the "Initial Problems at Forts Pickens and Sumter" section. This is Problem #3. Your essay will be the basis of the seminar's discussion on April 3. It will be collected and will constitute part of your class-work grade for the semester.
