Tulane Electronic Journals and Books

In your database searching, you should have found some full text articles by now. If you find relevant references that are without a link or in an existing bibliography, they may still be available online from another source. Don't give up until you search the following links:

Library Catalog - Discover if any Tulane Library has an electronic or print version of the title you are looking for.

Tulane E-Journal List - Find many E-Journals that come from databases and may not be in the Library Catalog. Search exact title, or contains using a word within the title. Also open citation and fill out a few boxes including PMID number from a PubMed seach to get an exact match. Note that a single title search can result in multiple link-out choices and access may vary.

Some frustrating points about electronic links

Most journals started online in the mid to late 1990's, although a few go back earlier. The library's subscription may not include all the online years. Some publishers impose an "embargo" on their journals, so recent issues are not available online for 6 months or a year. Some journals do not include every article in an issue or supplements or meeting abstracts online. Some articles will not have a PDF version, or the graphics will not print well.

Online journals are so complex; they don't always work as they should. If a link does not work in one place, always try another route. For example, in PubMed some Tulane full-text icons take you to the correct online article, but you are erroneously asked for an id/password. Going to that same journal through the Library Catalog is almost always successful.

The TU Link allows you to link from article citations in selected databases to related content that is available from the Tulane University Libraries. It will enable you to:

  • See if full-text is available online
  • Check the Library Catalog to see if a journal or book is in the Library
  • Get assistance from a librarian.

Sometimes you need to click on the actual database record in order to see the TU Link button. If there is still no button, you may be using a database that has not yet been TU Link enabled. Click here for more on 'TU Link'.

If you can't get to something online that you think should be available, please contact us and we'll try to help.

Reference Sources has links to many general interest encyclopedias, dictionaries, statistical reference books, etc. that are worth a look.

There are some electronic books available through our home page; just click on the E-Books link. Most of these are clinical textbooks, but NetLibrary covers a wide range of subjects, so take a look.

The Reference staff is available weekdays 8 - 5 (CST). If you need assistance with a search, feel free to call us at (504) 988-5155. Help is also available via email when you Ask a Librarian or medref@tulane.edu Please mention that you are a distance student.
