Outreach and Service Committee

The Outreach Committee is responsible for two areas:

  1. developing a plan for the public programming outreach designed to reach the broadest possible audience through innovative techniques, and

  2. developing a plan to promote cultural tourism and increase humanities content in regional tourism

Public Planning Outreach:

The committee will place emphasis on democratic dissemination of information and outreach to traditionally under-served audiences, e.g., minorities and the poor.

The committee will inventory and identify best practices for public programming outreach by surveying current practices of humanities organizations, museums, archives, libraries, and educational and cultural institutions. The committee will create a "best practices" inventory which will be the basis for a report to the center and an outreach workplan for the first operating year. The committee will also survey techniques for innovative media outreach, and develop a media strategy plan and outreach protocols for the center, including a database of regional media contacts. The committee will place emphasis on democratic dissemination of information and outreach to traditionally under-served audiences e.g. minorities and the poor.

Cultural Tourism:

The committee will survey and identify best practices in cultural tourism by consulting with state humanities councils, and government and business tourism agencies. The committee will also engage representatives from the region to identify resources and methods for using these existing resources. These consultations, along with an inventory of Internet-based resources, will lay the groundwork for a report and a strategic plan for promoting cultural tourism.

The outreach committee is particularly interested in successful models for infusing regional humanities studies into current tourism activities, as well as developing the Center’s own cultural tourism programming. The committee’s work will culminate in an outline for the outreach component of the final NEH proposal, and an outreach strategic plan for the Center’s first operating year.

We encourage your suggestions about outreach methods and possible collaborations with other organizations in the region.
