Announcements - Look here  for announcements concerning this course

Sept. 25 , 2008 - The Dean of Newcomb-Tulane College has announced that Saturday, October 18 will be a make-up day to make up for one of the Tuesday/Thursday classes missed during the evacuation for Hurricane Gustav.  This means that the field trip scheduled for that day will not be able to go, as it would interfere with other courses throughout the university and the Natural Disasters course having a make-up class on that day.   Thus, the Saturday October 18 field trip is now rescheduled for Sunday, October 19.  If you are signed up for that day and can't go, there is still room on the Sunday, Oct. 12 field trip.  Otherwise, all students that signed up for the October 18 field trip have been moved to the sign-up page for the October 19 field trip.

Because of the announcement of the make-up day, I have revised the course syllabus to reflect the missed classes and the make-up class. Both syllabus links at the top of this page now link to the revised syllabus. I suggest you print a copy of the PDF version of the syllabus.

Sept. 22 , 2008 - I have added another field trip opportunity.   This trip will run on Sunday, October 12.  If you have not yet signed up for a field trip, please take advantage of this opportunity.

Sept. 12 , 2008 - I have not yet revised the syllabus to reflect the classes we missed during the Hurricane Gustav Evacuation.  As a result the syllabus does not reflect the correct dates for homework assignment dates and due dates.  Homework II - Seismological Exercises, is now assigned with a due date of September 30.   See Homework Exercises.

Sept. 6 , 2008 - I hope everyone had a non-eventful evacuation and that you are all safe and slowly returning to New Orleans. I just now got internet access, and haven't yet had time to determine how we will deal with the missed classes last week. For now, note that field trips secheduled for Sept. 5 and 6 will be resecheduled. Homework I, that was to be due on Sept. 9, will now be due on Sept. 11.   I will update the syllabus early next week after I have had a chance to see how Tulane will deal with the missed week of classes. Check back often. Otherwise I will see you all in class on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

August 28, 2008 - Be sure to sign up for a field trip to the levee breaches - click HERE for information on how to sign up and for further information on the field trip.

Lecture Notes

Note:  Two versions of each set of lecture notes are shown in the table below.  The first is in html format, optimized for viewing on the Web.  You can print this version directly from your Web browser, but there is no guarantee that the pages will break where they are supposed to, since each person's browser can be set up differently (margins, fonts, font sizes, etc.).

The PDF (Portable Document Format) versions of the lecture notes are optimized for printing.  All page breaks should occur correctly.  If your web browser has the proper plug-in installed, clicking on the PDF will bring the file into your web browser from which you can then print the notes.  If the plug-ins are not installed, your web browser will either attempt to download the PDF files or offer to send you to the Adobe web site to download the plug-ins for your browser.  If you choose to download the PDF format lecture notes you will still need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print the files.  This and further information about the browser plug-ins can be obtained by clicking on the icon below.

Note for Netscape Users - Netscape versions 6 and 7 do not display the symbol font used in many of these documents. If you don't see the following characters as Greek letters alpha and beta - a b , then your browser has this problem.  If you are using Netscape versions 6 or 7, either see the following web site to modify your Netscape Browser so that it displays the symbol font correctly

http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/~osborne/MathTutorial/SYMFIX.HTM

or, view the PDF versions of the files which will always display all fonts correctly.
