
Practicum
Sites
Students in the Training
Program in School Psychology are placed as externs at a practicum site during
each of their four years of training. By the end of their training, students
typically will have acquired at least 1000 hours of supervised practicum
experience. Practicum experiences are organized around the specific training
objectives of the Program and reflect a graduated progression through
increasingly integrated and independent experiences. Practicum experiences are
designed to train our students how to conduct assessment, intervention, and
evaluation activities in a developmentally, culturally, and ecologically
sensitive manner. Practicum sites have been selected to provide our students
with exposure to the diversity of the greater New Orleans area.

The Academy of the Sacred
Heart is a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school for girls and young
women from Kindergarten through grade 12. Sacred Heart is part of an
international group of academic
institutions who commit themselves to a personal and active faith in God; a deep
respect for intellectual values; a
social awareness which impels to action; the building of community as a
Christian value; and personal growth
in an atmosphere of wise freedom. Sacred Heart has a strong counseling
department that provides group
counseling to all its students to foster their cognitive, spiritual, and
emotional growth. Individual counseling is also
made available to students. Externs meet weekly with the off-site supervisor,
Dr. Varela (Clinical Psychologist,
licensure pending) and the on-site supervisor, Dr. Neitzchman (Licensed
Professional Counselor).

The Chartwell Center is designed as a
school within a school, as it is located inside specially equipped rooms of
St. Stephen School, a local private Catholic school. The mission of the
school is to provide an individualized educational curriculum for children
diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder, autism and other
developmental or learning disorders. At the Chartwell Center, practicum
activities focus on functional behavioral assessment and the development of
behavioral supports to maximize the child’s ability to benefit from the
educational environment. In addition, externs begin to develop consultation
skills as teacher and parent consultations are often required for behavioral
assessment and intervention cases.

Children's Hospital

Children’s Hospital in New Orleans provides comprehensive evaluation and
management of cognitive,
emotional and behavioral problems of
childhood, and the emotional and behavioral problems associated
with acute and chronic medical
conditions. The extern at Children’s Hospital has the opportunity to become
involved in a variety of assessment,
treatment, and consultation activities. Caseloads include both inpatient
and outpatient clients and externs
have the opportunity to interact with many members of the hospital and
patient’s treatment team. In
addition, externs have the option of participating in interdisciplinary
outpatient
clinics. Monthly rehabilitation (HAB)
conferences allow for further didactic training regarding issues related to
pediatric care. Externs at
Children’s Hospital are supervised by Dr. Franz (Licensed Clinical
Psychologist),
and Dr. Kamps (Clinical Psychologist,
licensure pending). Students receive individual supervision
each
week with the off-site supervisor,
Dr. Varela.

¨ DePaul/Tulane Behavioral Health

DePaul/Tulane
Behavioral Health Center is a teaching facility that occupies a 13-acre
campus in uptown
New Orleans and offers programs for
children, adolescents, and adults. DePaul provides outpatient
services including individual, group
and family therapy. In addition, DePaul operates an Adolescent
Inpatient Acute and Partial Hospital
and a Residential Treatment Center. The extern has the opportunity
to become involved in a variety of
assessment, treatment, and consultation activities. Caseloads include
child and adult outpatient treatment
and evaluation cases, and adolescent treatment and evaluation within
the Adolescent Inpatient Acute and
Partial Hospital. In addition, externs participate in the Family
Assessment Clinic and have the
opportunity to attend weekly case conference presentations in the
Tulane Department of Psychiatry and
Neurology. The contact person and overall supervisor for externs
at DePaul is Dr. Griffin (Licensed
Clinical/Counseling Psychologist). Additional supervision within the
different treatment programs is
provided by other licensed psychologists.
In addition to this on-site
supervision, externs receive
individual supervision each week with Dr. Varela.

Educational Resources and Counseling (ERC) is a
department within the division of Student Affairs at Tulane University.
Mental health services are also provided by the psychiatry department of the
Tulane Student Health Center. The two centers have a good working
relationship and together offer a broad range of mental health services to
currently enrolled students. ERC provides short-term psychotherapy, study
strategies help, career testing, tutoring and disability services to
undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at Tulane. Several
therapy and support groups are offered each semester, depending upon student
interest. Individual counseling appointments are limited to 10 per year.

Jefferson Parish
Human Services Authority (JPHSA) has as its mission to minimize the existence
and disabling
effects of mental illness, substance abuse, and developmental disabilities and
to maximize opportunities for
individuals and families affected by those conditions to achieve a better
quality of life and to participate more
fully within the community. Within the Child and Family Services Division of
the (JPHSA), the extern serves as
part of a multidisciplinary team composed of social workers, psychiatrists and
psychologists who conduct
psychological assessments of children and make recommendations for services.
Participation in this process
requires that the extern conduct interviews with new referrals to the clinic on
Mondays, complete an evaluation
report during the week, and present that report to the multidisciplinary team on
Friday mornings, at which point
the team will decide as a group on the diagnosis and treatment recommendations
for the referred children.
Referrals to individual, family, and group therapy are typically made at this
time, and the extern will be assigned
cases based on his/her experience and training as well as on clinic needs.
Externs at JPHSA receive on-site
supervision from Dr. Bauer (Licensed Clinical Psychologist) and Dr. Elfant
(Licensed Clinical Psychologist).
Externs receive weekly off-site individual supervision with Dr. Newman.

The
New Orleans Speech and Hearing Center is a non-profit organization whose
mission is to provide with respect and understanding, quality, professional
services and products to those persons having communication
disorders/disabilities, including those unable to pay the full fee;
regardless of race, color, religion, national origin or disability. Externs
at the Center can expect to encounter a wide range presenting clinical
problems in youth including developmental delays, physical and sensory
disabilities, and academic and emotional/behavioral problems. Clients often
come from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds and range in
age from preschool to emerging adulthood. Practicum activities include
conducting comprehensive psychological assessments that involve the
participation of parents and schools as well as input from the Center staff
(e.g., audiologists, speech and language pathologists, etc.). In addition,
externs are expected to provide consultation to Center staff on a variety of
issues, including psychological case conceptualization, recommendations on
adjunctive behavioral support and parent-training and educational planning.
Externs at the Center receive weekly on-site supervision from Dr.
Fontenelle, IIII (Licensed School Psychologist) and off-site supervision
from Dr. Newman.

The Newcomb College Nursery School features a

School is an African American Catholic school that embraces the African
American heritage with a holistic approach to academics that stimulates
intellectual, spiritual, social and physical growth. The school has
dedicated space for mental health services and externs have access to two
rooms for assessment activities, therapy, and record keeping. Externs meet
weekly with the on-site supervisor, Dr. Rovaris (Licensed Counseling
Psychologist), as well as the off-site supervisor, Dr. Newman (Licensed
Clinical Psychologist).

Upward Bound
is a federally funded program on Tulane’s campus that prepares local public
high school students for admission and success in college by developing
academic and social skills through a variety of programs. Tulane externs
perform many roles at Upward Bound, including conducting individual and
group therapy as well as parenting skills groups. Externs also participate
in assessment and the development of educational plans for the students as
well as program evaluation. Weekly on-site individual supervision is
provided by Dr. Dasher, the Director of the program and an Educational
Psychologist. Weekly off-site individual supervision is provided by Dr.
Newman.
