Prevention

Protecting yourself doesn't have to be time consuming or difficult. There are simple things you can do that don't require you sitting at home with the doors locked.

Self Defense Classes

One of the easiest things to do is to take a self defense class. Tulane University offers them on campus through R.A.D. Systems (Rape Aggression Defense System), a nation wide program. They only require a few hours and teach realistic, self-defense tactics and techniques that you get to practice during the class. Visit the Tulane R.A.D. site to learn more.

Protecting Yourself At Parties/On Dates

Educate yourself. Find out about current date rape drugs, what they look like, their packaging, and effects they have. If you recognize a drug or its packaging at a party or bar, LEAVE IMMEDIATELY and contact the police.

Party by the buddy system. Check with your friends every 20 minutes. If something seems strange, have everyone LEAVE IMMEDIATELY. Watch for signs of over-intoxication or rapid intoxication. Discuss your habits ahead of time so your friends know what you would do under normal conditions. If you are leaving the party, let your friends know where and with whom you are going. It is a good idea to have a designated sober "lookout" to be someone who can drive and keep an eye on the situation.

Bring your own drinks. Whether or not you choose to drink alcohol, bring your own beverages in containers that you can keep covered and in your possession at all times.

Do not accept drinks from anyone other than a bartender or waitress. Always open your drinks if they are offered by someone else. Accompany your date to the bar if they want to bring you a drink, especially at parties.

Do not accept drinks from a punch bowl or other open container. Never drink something out of a container that guys are offering to girls and not drinking themselves-if a guy won't drink it why should you?

Never leave your drink unattended. If you go to the bathroom, take it with you. If you get up to dance, finish it or take it with you. A friend left to watch your drink can easily get distracted.

Don't drink anything that has a funny smell, color or taste. If it seems strange, THROW IT OUT! Call the police or get to a hospital to be tested for the presence of date rape drugs.
