Only 18.3% of Lousiana residents engage in the recommended amount of physical activity; 5 times per week for 30 minutes.

Americans do not engage in enough physical activity - it is a fact. It is unfortunate the most of us do not even get enough physical activity each day to stave off disease and illness. The obesity rate in this country is higher than it has ever been, and will continue to climb unless we take action. It has been proven that regular physical activity is associated with a longer, healthier life. Physically active individuals have a lower risk of all types of disease, including, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and even some types of cancer. With this information why do Americans still insist on being sedentary? Unfortunately, most of us do not have the time in our everyday routine to engage in exercise. Or at least that is what we insist. The truth is, it only takes 30 minutes of exercise, at least 3 days a week to reap the benefits of a healthier life. We here in Louisiana, are actually some of the most overweight, unhealthy people in America. As both New Orleanians and Tulanians we need to take advantage of the year-round warm weather and the beautiful Tulane campus and actually get out ourselves in shape. Melanie Morris, a Clinical Assistant Professor here at Tulane, has mapped out some very easy-to-use walking trails around the Tulane campus in order for those of us with little time to get our recommended dose of daily exercise. These trails can be taken advantage of on your lunch breaks, between classes, or at the end of the day. No matter what time works for you, walking is an activity that most all of us can accomplish. To find out more information on walking and exercise and health in general, please take a look at some of the above links.
