Academic Requirements:
Admission to the program is highly competitive and limited to graduates of accredited colleges and university who have completed a well-rounded liberal arts program that included study in the humanities, social sciences, and human biology. A grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4-point scale is preferred. Applicants with less than a 3.0 may be considered if able to document a high level of academic ability through either a recent Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with combined verbal and quantitative scores of 1000 or better, a strong performance in the junior and senior years of undergraduate study or in a postgraduate degree program, or strong employer references. The GRE is not required of candidates with a 3.0 or higher GPA.
All applications are reviewed. Strong candidates who do not meet grade point average criterion may be admitted on academic probation for the first 15 credit hours. Upon successful completion of the first 15 credit hours with a GPA of 3.0 or better, the probationary status will be removed. Failure to achieve the academic requirements will result in automatic dismissal.

Financial Aid
Financing a professional education can be difficult, particularly in this period of federal cutbacks in financial aid to higher education. At the Tulane School of Social Work, we make every effort to make funds available from a variety of sources so that all qualified students may gain access to our MSW program. The school is committed to assisting students who are qualified for need-based assistance. All students who request financial aid on their application are sent the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) brochure which provides in-depth information about need-based financial aid through the central Financial Aid Office at Tulane. Decisions concerning admission and financial aid are made independently of one another. Applying for financial aid will neither help nor hinder the applicant's chances for admission.
Need-Based Financial Aid
Need-based assistance typically consists of a combination of loans, partial tuition waivers, and work study as determined by federal eligibility criteria. Because loans and work study are federally funded, applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents, carrying at least half-ti me academic load (6 hours) and be in good academic standing. Any offer of federal funds made through the Tulane School of Social Work is contingent upon the availability of adequate federal funds.
FAFSA
Tulane requires every applicant requesting any need-based form of financial aid (whether work study, partial tuition waiver, or loan) to submit a FAFSA form. This FAFSA form may be obtained for the School of Social Work Admissions Office or directly from FAFSA, P.O. Box 4032, Iowa City, IA 52243. Applicants must complete all sections of the form in order to be considered for any need based financial aid at Tulane. The Tulane Financial Aid Office will review the FAFSA form to determine each student's need, using this FAFSA analysis as a guide but reserving the right to review each application on an individual basis. Applicants can also complete a FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
Student Loan Programs
Federal Stafford Loans are low-interest loans made to students by lenders including banks, credit unions, or savings and loan associations to assist in paying the cost of attending school.
Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans up to $8,500 per year are offered to students with financial need. "Subsidized" means that the interest is paid by the federal government while the student is enrolled at least half-time. Students may borrow Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans as well for up to $10,000 per year. "Unsubsidized" means that the student pays the interest on the loan while in school (or agrees to capitalize the interest and add it to the principal upon repayment). You may borrow a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan up to the annual limit of $18,500. Interest rates range from 7 to 9%. There is a 3% origination fee on subsidized loans which is deducted from the face value of the loan.
Federal Perkins Loans are granted on a need basis by Tulane. Perkins Loans normally do not exceed $2000 per year in order to assist as may eligible students as possible. Repayment being six to nine months after you are no longer at least a half-time student. Deferment request must be made in writing to the Student Loan Office, which determines what documentation will be required. There are forgiveness or cancellation provisions for combat military service, for service in specific volunteer agencies, or for teachers, nurses, medical technicians, and social work professionals who are providing specific designated services or who are working in specific designated services or who are working in specific designated shortage areas. Contact the Student Loan Office for more information.
