Summer 2008

V-day
Friday, April 4, 2008

The Mary Amelia Center recognized the passing of V-day, a day dedicated to raising  awareness of violence against women, by co-hosting a Wine Tasting and Silent Art Auction to benefit the New Orleans Women’s Shelter.  The Center partnered with Common Ground Health Clinic and the Craige Cultural Center to organize this event held on Friday, April 4th, 2008.  The event featured performers such as Sunni Patterson and Asia, Zion Trinity, Mo’lasses and several others.  Local artists donated more than 35 pieces to the auction.  Featured wines ranged from local fruit wine from Amato’s Winery to Sebeka Shiraz from South Africa.  Several fine cheeses were made available along with some local soul food favorites.  We were pleasantly surprised when Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues and founder of V-day, arrived and took a moment to say a few inspiring words.  The event was considered a huge success by all who attended. Over $1000 was donated for the New Orleans Women’s Shelter.

National Women’s Health Week
May 11 – 17, 2008

May 11th – 17th is National Women’s Health Week this year.  We, at the Mary Amelia Center, feel it is important to celebrate women and girls this year by organizing a Healthy Women’s Luncheon in collaboration with St. Anna’s Episcopal Church and St. Anna’s Medical Mission.  The event will be held Saturday, May 17th from 11:30 – 1pm.  Women will enjoy a healthy lunch while networking with other community women and girls.  Attendants will also receive a free gift bag filled with women’s resources and learn a few relaxation techniques for managing everyday stress.   We look forward to sharing an afternoon with the women of the Treme community and surrounding areas.
