Computing Services

Both Tulane Infrastructure Services (TIS) and SCS operate computing facilities and services for students of SCS, with both PC and Mac labs available during posted hours.

TCS operates a cluster of IBM RS/6000 machines with 320 megabytes of memory and 8.1 gigabytes of on-line disk storage for student and faculty use. The cluster operates under the control of IBM's AIX/UNIX operating system. Users communicate through either vi or ex editors from terminal and microcomputer facilities throughout Tulane or via dial-up telephone lines.

There are five public terminal and microcomputer facilities on the main campus and two at the medical center. All contain terminals and a line printer connected to the IBM RS/600 cluster, IBM compatible microcomputers, and Apple Macintoshes. The main terminal facility in the Richardson Building contains text terminals, graphics terminals, a high speed line printer, a duplex laser printer for text and graphic output, and large scale plotter and color copier for graphics output. The main microcomputer facility, also in the Richardson Building, contains laser printers accessible from IBM compatible microcomputers and Macintoshes.

There is a limited access microcomputer facility in the SCS office suite (Room 133). Students and faculty of SCS can reserve the facility for use related to courses in all academic subject areas. The microcomputers have 486 and 586 CPUs, DOS and Windows operating system software and a variety of appropriate application software. The machines are connected both to a local server via Novell Netware and to Tulane University's campus backbone via TCP/IP.

The department of Computer Science operates a Digital Equipment Corporation VAX 11/780 running VMS and Pyramid 90X running the UNIX operating system. The Department of Chemical Engineering operats a VAX 11/750 for use by its faculty and students. The Department of Biomedical Engineering operates a local area VAX cluster MicroVAX 3600, a MicroVAX II, and VAXstation 2000s.
