A Brief Overview of the Senate

The University Senate is Tulane's senior internal governance body. It consists of elected faculty representatives from the academic divisions, senior administrators, student and staff representatives, and at-large members elected from a slate nominated by the Senate Committee on Committees. The Senate is chaired by the President of the University. Its purview consists of all matters of general University concern, especially those which affect at least two academic divisions. For details of the Senate's membership and structure at present, click on the "Constitution" and "Roster" links in the table-of-contents window on the left.

The Senate normally meets during Spring and Fall Semesters on the first working Monday of each month except January, with extra meetings in April and/or May if necessary. For details of the schedule of meetings for the current year and the predictable part of meeting agendas, click on the "Calendar of Meetings " link in the table-of-contents window on the left.

Minutes of past Senate meetings can be found on this site. Approved minutes of each meeting are circulated by e-mail throughout the university as they become available.

Much of the Senate's work is spearheaded by its Standing Committees, which are enumerated along with their charges and compositions in By-law III of the Constitution. Their current membership is posted here under "Committees".
