Welcome to my webpage.  I am an ethnomusicologist that specializes in nationalism, alternative modernities, and the politics of aesthetics.  My primary field research site is coastal Peru, where I have looked at the role that memory and nostalgia have had in the development of criollo popular music during the twentieth century.  I am currently writing a book on professional Afroperuvian musicians in the city of Lima and the role that they have in the creation of an alternative modernity that seeks to musically negotiate African diasporic, local, and cosmopolitan aspects of their everyday experiences.

At Tulane University I teach courses on music and culture with an emphasis on Latin America.  I am a faculty member of the Newcomb Department of Music, a core faculty member of the the Stone Center for Latin American Studies, and an affiliated faculty member of the African and African Diaspora Studies Program.  Please visit their sites for further information about these programs at Tulane.  If you are more generally interested in the study of music and culture, please visit the links section of this site for further information.  Also, visit the events section for more details on lectures, concerts, and conferences about music at Tulane.
