New Orleans

Welcome

Welcome

As the new dean, it is a special pleasure for me to welcome you to the Tulane School of Architecture. Architectural education is at an exciting moment of change, and Tulane is particularly well positioned to develop new paradigms for design education. The school will continue to build on its impressive strength by emphasizing innovative building design. It will also continue to engage cross-disciplinary initiatives essential to the continually expanding field of architectural practice. The extraordinary setting of New Orleans provides powerful lessons: through the small scale of architectural detail; the scale of the individual house; the urban structure; and the larger context of regional infrastructure and ecology. The distinctive built and natural environment speaks to the need for leadership through design. We strive to prepare students who are uniquely equipped to develop creative solutions to many of society’s contemporary challenges.

Great schools of architecture have always reflected their regional and urban identity by engaging the community in meaningful and often nuanced ways. Nowhere is there greater opportunity for constructive interaction than in Tulane’s unique relationship to the City of New Orleans, a relationship that is increasingly strengthened. With Tulane as a major institution in the city, the School of Architecture takes full advantage of this critical relationship as is reflected in the professional education of our students, inspired teaching and student work, and the manner we engage the unique challenges of the city, most recently with the creation of the Tulane City Center and programs like URBANbuild, and GREENbuild.

The Tulane School of Architecture is a vibrant and exciting place to study architecture, preservation and related fields. Design is at the very center of its strength, and the education you receive at Tulane combines intellectual development in diverse areas of inquiry with a rigorous attention to the discipline and practice of architecture. Architecture is a social art and science, and TSA’s engagement with communities through centers, design-build activities, publications, and study abroad programs, combined with a university-wide service-learning program, produces an extraordinarily rich range of experiences for our students.
