New Orleans Public Schools History: A Brief Overview

Abstract:

This report reviews the history of New Orleans public schools from the opening of the city’s first public school in 1842 to developments after Hurricane Katrina during the 2006-2007 school year.  It highlights the financial difficulties and racial inequities of the system as it developed through the 19th and 20th centuries.
