The Cowen Institute: Mission & Vision

Who We Are | Mission & Vision | History

Mission
The Cowen Institute aims to raise student achievement and college readiness by creating and sustaining an environment that enables public school success.

Vision
The Cowen Institute takes Tulane University beyond the typical framework of higher education institutions that interact with K-12 public education systems through programs that focus on teacher preparation, leadership development, and policy research. Few universities have been able to make a substantial impact on public education in their community or in the nation.  Using a multidisciplinary approach to engaging Tulanians, the Cowen Institute aspires to pioneer a new model for the role of higher education institutions in public schooling systems.

By turning around a failing public education system and improving student achievement, the Cowen Institute seeks to catalyze a model of urban education reform that serves as a national example. We envision a community where access to a high-quality public education is universal; where parents and community members are engaged in public schools; and where educational non-profit organizations and school support systems partner to address issues of mutual interest.

Friends and Partners
More than 300 Tulane students are currently working in public schools across the city, thanks to a partnership between the Cowen Institute, the Center for Public Service, and the Career Center.  Tulane students are providing a range of services, including tutoring, researching best practices for teaching students with autism, and preparing press releases for a consultant group working with the school system.
