DONATE NOW!
AdvanceNOLA, the Cowen Institute's college readiness program, is currently working with four public high schools in Orleans Parish to implement Advanced Placement courses. A variety of AP courses are being offered that include Biology, Chemistry, English Language, English Literature, Statistics, and three classes of Calculus.
We are asking for your help - We are collecting all ACT/SAT and AP exam review books as well as college admissions information. These materials will greatly help the success of the program. Teachers, AP tutors, and students would then have access to this collection in the hopes that it will help future students excel on their exams.
If you would like to donate any materials, please drop them off to the Cowen Institute at 200 Broadway, Suite 108, New Orleans or contact Emily Remington with any questions at eremingt@tulane.edu or 504-274-3684.
Programming
The Cowen Institute programming area identifies, incubates, and replicates programs that fall into two specific categories: college readiness and university-based.
College Readiness Programs
The overall goal of this initiative is simple – to provide high school students with the tools needed to succeed in college. With a $1.6 million grant from the ExxonMobil Foundation, the Cowen Institute is piloting an Advanced Placement training and incentive program in four public high schools in New Orleans over the next five years. This program is infusing these high schools with a new culture and direction based on improving post-secondary education awareness, preparedness, and success. It is premised on proven success using a philosophy of high expectations and incentives for performance. Research has shown that the main components of this initiative - providing at-risk students access to advanced placement courses, extensive professional development opportunities for school personnel, and performance-based financial incentives for students and teachers - have proven to drastically increase the number of students (especially minorities) who are prepared for and graduate from college.
