Service Learning Internships

Advanced Placement | Grants | Internships | Cowen Fellows

In partnership with Tulane’s Center for Public Service, the Cowen Institute is pleased to announce the launch of its Internship Program.  This fall, the first set of student interns has been placed at seven sites across the city, including: Communities in Schools, Concordia Consulting Group, Head Start, and New Orleans Outreach.  The goal of the program is to provide students an opportunity to build upon their community service experiences through service-learning.

Currently, interns are offering their community partners a range of services from researching best practices for teaching students with autism to preparing press releases for a consultant group working with the New Orleans public schools.

Students will earn credit for completing an intensive, 60-70 hour service assignment over the course of the semester.  The students are selected from an array of disciplines and work on projects that illustrate skills, theories, or applications related to their majors. This allows participants to not only contribute directly to the community, but also to gain valuable and relevant skills while engaging in applied discipline-based work. The internship program also encourages civic engagement and fosters professional development.

Interns are required to participate in a weekly seminar that offers them an opportunity to discuss issues relating to their experience, while providing a reflective and academic component to the internship program. The program is open to junior and senior level students from 14 majors, as varied as: Cell and Molecular Biology and English, and Engineering and Women’s Studies.  Students must have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA to be eligible.

If you have any questions, please contact Katie Houck at khouck@tulane.edu or 504-862-3360.
