Housing Options for Faculty and Staff
The following information regards limited housing options that will be available for displaced Tulane employees. The university encourages everyone in need of housing to actively look for housing on their own.
Tulane-FEMA Trailers:
FEMA has given the university provisional approval for trailers at the Primate Center and Rosen House parking lot sites. However, the agency has not provided a delivery date for the trailers, or told us how many trailers will be installed at each site, or which site will receive trailers first. To date, approval has not been received for the Hebert site in Belle Chasse. While we expect trailers to be delivered in mid-to-late January, please keep in mind that this is NOT firm, and there may be delays. Employees will be offered a trailer in the order in which their applications were received, regardless of the location requested. While we will attempt to accommodate all location requests, we cannot guarantee that your site request can be granted. The exact site will be determined after FEMA determines how many trailers can be placed at each location and provides a delivery and installation date. For additional information please email Rhonda Coignet at rhondac@tulane.edu.
Georgian Apartment Building, (2233 St. Charles Avenue)
A small number of 400 s.f. unfurnished studio apartments have become available at the Georgian Apartment Building on St. Charles Avenue. Rents range from $600-$825 per month, plus utilities. (Current rental rates in the uptown area vary widely and average $750 per month and up.) The Georgian apartments will be offered on a lottery-basis to employees who have applied for a FEMA Trailer. If your name is pulled in the lottery and you are interested in renting an apartment, you will be required to go through an application process with the Georgian’s management, which includes a background/security check. A minimum 6-month lease and $300 security deposit are required. No pets are allowed. Rent will be paid via payroll deduction. For additional information please email Karen Snyder at ksnyder@tulane.edu.
Dream Cruise Ship
To house displaced Tulane students, the university has secured a cruise ship which will dock at the Orange Street wharf on the Mississippi River from December 26 through mid-May 2006 (http://www.tulane.edu/newwave/122205_ships.html). Approximately 200 cabins will be made available for displaced faculty and staff to rent on a month-to-month basis. Rents for these ship-board cabins are $725 per person per cabin and $850 per cabin for a family (as defined by Tulane’s Benefits department). Rents include housekeeping services for the duration of the stay. Food service is a required additional $375 per month per person, with a reduced rate available for children 12 years old and younger. For additional information please email Karen Snyder at ksnyder@tulane.edu.
Modular Housing, University Square
The university will install modular housing in stages throughout the month of January at University Square. Each unit will accommodate 4 people. Rents for these units have not been finalized, but are expected to range between $750-$1100 per month, plus utilities. No pets are allowed. A minimum 6-month lease is required and rent will be paid via payroll deduction. For additional information please email Karen Snyder at ksnyder@tulane.edu.
