Frequently Asked Questions

*Updated 11.29/05*

What housing options are available?

Campus housing options include existing on-campus residences, cruise ships, modular housing, and apartments.  Assignments will be made based on a variety of factors, including your preference, whether you need housing as an individual or with family members, and your class standing.

Am I required to pay an application fee?

New applicants for student housing will be required to pay an application fee of $300. You may pay the fee with a check or money order.  When you are assigned a room, the fee will be applied against your room charge.  If you are not assigned a room, then the fee will be refunded.

Can I use my financial aid for the application fee?

No.  You may not use financial aid for this fee.

What happens to my application if I decide not to live in the housing offered by the university?

The $300 application fee will be forfeited.  Additionally, you will not be able to apply it to any other university charges.

I am an international student and am not eligible for FEMA. May I still apply for housing?

Yes, you do not have to be FEMA-eligible to apply for student housing. Please visit the Housing & Residence Life website for Assignments Information for Spring 2006.

When will I know if I am offered an assignment?

The majority of housing assignments will be offered during the first two weeks of December, with an anticipated completion date of mid-December.  We will continue to offer assignments as last-minute openings become available.

When can I move into my campus housing?

Freshmen move in has been scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006.  Other students will be able to move in beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14.  Graduate students will be able to move in as spaces become available in conjunction with the beginning of their Spring class work.

When I moved off campus, I forfeited the housing portion of my scholarship.  If I move into campus housing, will I be entitled to reclaim that portion of my scholarship?

Unfortunately, once a student forfeits the housing portion of a scholarship, the student is no longer eligible to receive the funds.

If I received a fall 2005 housing assignment, do I need to apply for a new assignment?

No.  Students receiving fall 2005 housing assignments do not need to apply for a new assignment.

What will life on the ships be like?

There will be student affairs and residential life staff housed on both ships.  They will offer a full range of residential life programs.  In addition, one ship will be structured as a residential college for undergraduate students.  Those faculty members living on the residential college cruise ship will contribute to educational and programmatic goals.

Will I be expected to follow specific rules in the campus housing options?

All persons living in University Housing will be required to abide by the Code of Conduct and the Housing and Residential Life Community Living Standards. Additionally, persons living on board a cruise ship will be required to comply with regulations established by the cruise ship and Department of Homeland Security.  Specific cruise ship policies will be available shortly.

What will campus housing cost?

There are a number of different types of housing.  The cost structure for new campus housing options has been based upon similarly appointed, existing on-campus housing.  For a complete list of options and pricing, please direct your web browser to this link.

What about parking?

Parking will be available at all university campuses and housing locations.  Your Tulane parking permit, needed to park on campus, will be required to park in the cruise ship parking areas. A car is not essential, since a shuttle service will also be provided to and from each location and between the uptown and downtown campuses.

Will there be residential life staff and programming at all housing locations?

Yes.  We will have student staff including resident advisors and desk assistants.  There will also be additional student staff opportunities in other areas on board the cruise ships.  Students in the new housing locations will also have the opportunity to engage in the planning of programming and events.

What do I do for meals while on board the cruise ship?

There will be a meal plan tailored to this unique arrangement with dining opportunities on the ships as well as on campus.  Please be aware that a meal plan will be required for all residents of the cruise ships. Details will be available shortly.

Will there be security on the ship?

There will be university and ship security officers on board.

Can I choose my roommate?

You will have the opportunity to request a specific roommate; however, we are unable to guarantee particular assignments at this time.

Will Tulane provide transportation?

Tulane will provide free shuttle service between student housing locations and the uptown and downtown campuses.

What if I only need housing for a part of the semester?

We require commitments for the entire academic term. You may select to sign up for housing for both the Spring and Lagniappe terms, or sign up for just the Spring term only and move out prior to the start of the Lagniappe term.

Are pets allowed in any university housing?
