A new lunchtime film series this summer will provide faculty, staff and students with food for thought.
Bring your lunch and head to the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine each Wednesday this summer for hour-long films about timely public health topics. The films, which are listed below, will be shown in room 1204 of the public health building, 1440 Canal St., at noon. No advance registration is required to attend.
The lunchtime series is jointly sponsored by the Department of International Health and Development and the public health school's student government association.
Highlighting the film series is the six-part "Rx for Survival," filmed in more than 20 countries and narrated by actor Brad Pitt. The series addresses the serious crossroads at which world heath stands at the dawn of the 21st century as new and emergent diseases combine with superbugs to threaten public health worldwide. Other films include: "Doomsday Flu," which examines the 1918 pandemic that killed 22 million people worldwide; "Elixir of Death," which looks at the 1937 release of a new cough medicine that contained a poison found in antifreeze; and "Outbreak! The New Plagues," which spotlights viral killers brought on by changes in our environment and behavior.

The university will host memorial services for two longtime members of the Tulane community who lost their lives during the period following Hurricane Katrina.
A service to honor J. Karlem “Ducky” Riess, an emeritus professor of physics who died in September while being evacuated from New Orleans, will be held on Friday, Jan. 20, at 3 p.m. at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. The church is located at State Street and St. Charles Avenue. A service to honor M. David Gelfand, a professor of law who in September collapsed on a Florida beach after swimming, will be held on Sunday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. in Room 110, Weinmann Hall, Tulane University Law School.
A native New Orleanian, Riess was part of the Tulane community for most of the 20th century, as a student, faculty member and then, in later years, as a student-activities adviser and university marshal. In 2002, Riess was awarded the President’s Medal from Tulane President Scott Cowen.
Gelfand, who held the Phelps Chair in Constitutional Law, was a member of the Tulane law faculty for 30 years and was a widely recognized expert on civil rights, voting rights, redistricting issues and municipal financing. Both scholar and activist, Gelfand was honored by the American Civil Liberties Union and other organizations for his work in bringing constitutional test cases.
A memorial service was held in December for Tulane staff member Frank D’Arcangelo, who died in the flood following Hurricane Katrina. He was director of the accounts receivable department.
