Frequently Asked Questions About Tuition Waiver Benefit

Has the university’s policy on tuition waivers for faculty and staff changed as a result of Hurricane Katrina?

A: No.  The tuition waiver benefit is still available for eligible faculty and staff.  However, faculty and staff employee tuition waivers for the fall 2005 semester will be honored at the University College Elmwood campus only.  Employee tuition waivers are not transferable to other institutions.  Dependents of faculty and staff who have dependent tuition waivers may apply as a visiting student if the host institution will honor the waiver.

I am a full-time staff member. I had to evacuate to Houston and enrolled in night classes at another university.  Can I use the tuition waiver?

A: The university will not extend the tuition waiver for employees to other institutions.  If you are an employee taking classes at another institution, you are financially responsible for any charges that may be required by that institution.

I am a full-time staff member planning to return to campus on Dec. 19 to resume work. Will I be eligible for tuition waiver in the future?

A: If you have met the requirements for eligibility for the tuition waiver benefit as outlined in the staff handbook, it is anticipated that you will be able to take advantage of the waiver.

Are part-time faculty who were separated from the university eligible for tuition waiver for a dependent child who is a senior in high school?

A: No, not unless the faculty member meets the criteria for the extended tuition waiver benefit as outlined in the staff handbook and the faculty handbook.

What if a Tulane dependent was enrolled at another institution under the Tuition Exchange agreement?

A: The host institution will determine eligibility to continue attending under the Tuition Exchange agreement.  Tulane University only certifies eligibility to participate.  The host school determines whether or not to award a Tuition Exchange scholarship to the student..

What if I was enrolled at Tulane University under a Tuition Exchange scholarship?

A: Tulane University will apply the value of your Tulane University Tuition Exchange scholarship toward your fall term Tulane University charges.  You will be responsible for any remaining balance.  If you attended another institution during the fall term and that institution charged tuition, you must forward a copy of the tuition bill you paid to the host institution to the

Office of Student Accounts Receivable
Tulane University
New Orleans, LA  70118.

The amount that you paid for tuition (tuition only) at the host institution less any financial aid provided by the host institution will be shown on your account as a credit.

Is Tulane University paying for dependent tuition waivers if the student was enrolled at Tulane but attended another university during the fall semester?

A:  The University will credit your account at Tulane with the tuition waiver.  The vast majority of institutions are not charging our students tuition if they can verify that their Tulane charges are paid.  However, please note that it is the host institution’s decision whether or not to honor the tuition waiver and/or to charge you for tuition.  As a reminder, the tuition waiver covers the cost of tuition only and does not apply to fees and expenses.

I was separated from the university. My daughter was accepted at Tulane for the fall semester and was going to attend on a tuition waiver. Because of the storm, she never started classes at Tulane. Further, she was unable to get into another university due to family hardships following the storm. Will she be eligible for the tuition waiver this spring?

A:  Yes.  The university will honor the tuition waiver for the completion of your daughter’s undergraduate degree as long as she is continuously enrolled at the university.  You will be required to provide Human Resources with proof of her dependent status on an annual basis, in accordance with the tuition waiver benefit policy.

I was a full-time faculty member who had to voluntarily resign because of Katrina.  My son was accepted at Tulane and planned to begin his freshman year in the fall 2005 semester.  Because of Hurricane Katrina, he enrolled at LSU for the fall semester. Is he still eligible for tuition waiver this spring?

A: Because your separation from the university was a voluntary resignation, your dependent may not use the tuition waiver, as you do not meet the criteria outlined in the extended tuition waiver benefit as detailed in the faculty handbook.

Have the tuition waivers been processed? If not, when will they be processed?

A: Tuition waivers completed before the hurricane have been processed and credited to the student’s bill.  If there should be a credit on your dependent’s bill for a waiver and it does not appear, please contact Renita Bundy at rbundy@tulane.edu.

Please note that there will be no tuition waivers processed for any employee other than those for the University College short session at Elmwood that were filed before Aug. 28, as employees have not had the opportunity to begin attending Tulane classes.  The tuition waiver is not applicable to classes offered at other universities or colleges.

I want to attend the University College short session at Elmwood. However, when I attempt to fill out the form on the website, the form automatically populates for the spring semester. How do I correct this?

A:  Unfortunately, if you did not fill out a tuition waiver in advance of Katrina, it cannot be completed and submitted at this time due to limited staff and technology capability.

I will be separated from the university after 25 years as a full-time staff member. Will my dependents be eligible for future tuition waivers?

A:  Please refer to the extended tuition waiver benefit as detailed in the staff handbook.  It should be noted that dependent tuition waivers are for undergraduate education only.
