Future Directions and Plans for TCARES -
TULANE CENTER ON AGING FOR RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND SERVICES
The mission of TCARES is to increase intellectual exchanges among faculty members, students, and the community, stress interdisciplinary activities, and focus on multidisciplinary cooperation in research, education and services in four areas of endeavor: the continuum of health, the families of the aging, minorities and aging and intergenerational approaches.
Housed and funded by the School of Social Work, TCARES has a small line budget for a research assistant and committee activities. The director is assigned as part of the workload of a TSSW faculty. TCARES works through one Interdisciplinary Committee which consists of representatives from the uptown and downtown campuses and community representatives. The 1995-1996 staff consists of Dr Margaret Campbell as director and a part-time research assistant.

TCARES has worked in three major areas of education, research and grantwriting.
TCARES worked for the development and provision of educational and training programs in aging at continuing education and degree levels including the Louisiana Geriatric Education Center at LSU Medical School; Virginia Commonwealth University teleconferences on aging; TCARES 1989 Conference, "Health and the Elderly"; graduate courses for a certificate program in the School of Social Work and undergraduate courses in gerontology for University College; and for University College a proposal for an undergraduate major in gerontology using the resources of the university.
TCARES conducted surveys of Tulane faculty expertise in the field of aging
in 1984, 1987 and 1993. The 1993 survey identified 28 Tulane faculty with
an interest and/or expertise in aging. Of the 28 respondents, 19 were
from the Medical Complex and 9 from the Uptown Campus. TCARES provides
research consultation and services to community programs and yearly
coordinates 3-5 MSW research studies in the field of aging. Click here for
full results of the survey.
TCARES staff developed grants for TCARES and affiliated programs including the 1989 Conference, the Louisiana Geriatric Education Center program and the New Orleans Council on Aging. Other grants written by TCARES were not funded.
