Vocabulary
Uke: The person attacking and being thrown, pinned, etc.
Nage: The person being attacked and performing the technique.
Hanmi: Stance.
Ma Ai: Fighting distance. Having the correct distance for the attack. It comes from feeling.
Gyaku Hanmi: Standing in hanmi so that the opponent's stance is not a mirror image of one's own (i.e.: nage and uke both have their left foots forward).
Ai Hanmi: Standing in hanmi so that the opponent's stance mirrors one's own (i.e.: nage's right foot and uke's left foot towards the front).
Onegai Shimasu: (pronounced oh-ne-gah-shi-mas) This has many meanings but for our purposes it means "Please, let us practice."
Arigato Gozaimashita: "Thank you very much." Often said at the end of class, after practicing with somebody, or after one has been given a tip from the instructor.
