From the Alpha Beta Omega Chapter scrapbook in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Records.
The Amistad Research Center has received the records of the Alpha Beta OmegaChapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Inc., the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American women. The sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC, in 1908. The Alpha Beta Omega Chapter was chartered in New Orleans in 1927 and was the first graduate chapter of the South Central Region.
The records date from ca. 1937 to 2006 and document activities of the ABO Chapter, as well as the national organization. The bulk of the records date from the 1960s to the present and are comprised of correspondence, membership lists, handbooks and programs, financial records, pledge reports, and memorabilia. Publications include copies of the constitution and by-laws of Alpha Kappa Alpha and issues of Ivy Leaf, the official publication of the sorority. Completing the collection is an Alpha Beta Omega Chapter scrapbook containing group portraits of the chapter from as early as 1937, as well as other photographs, newspaper clippings, and programs documenting the activities and community involvement of the chapter.
