ASTA (RELW)291, 391 Religions of Asia

As we approach the year 2001, Asia is rapidly becoming a major player in the global arena of culture and ideas. At the base of Asian culture are her great religious and philosophical traditions.

This course will cover the seven major religions of Asia: the religions originating in India, namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism; and the religions of China and Japan, including Confucianism, Taoism, and Shintoism. Exploring each through survey

text and primary source readings, we will trace their 'development into significant belief systems of the modern world.  This involves a broad religious studies approach that incorporates myth, symbol, ritual, theology, and community as well as cultural and artistic expressions of religiosity.
