Second Tulane Excursion to Anatolia

As many of you are aware, I am leading a second Tulane excursion to Anatolia (Turkey) this May and June 2000 in tandem with an Honors course History 410-70H/Classics 409-70H. As in 1994, I am making an appeal on behalf of the undergraduate and graduate students for financial assistance in the following fashion.

- Contributions to Account 628881. A tax deductible contribution can be made directly to Account 628881 (Classical and Byzantine Studies). Gifts may be earmarked to meet the expenses of a specific student or general expenses. Letters for tax purposes will be issued. Contributions by mail should be sent to Professor Kenneth W. - Excursion T-Shirt. Thomas Bayer has designed a T-shirt for sale with profits going into a general fund to purchase water and picnic lunches for students on excursion. The design will soon be available to review. Please notify my secretary-general Christoph Rosenmüller (314-6469, crosenm@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu ) as to the number and size of T-shirts, who has a mail box in the History office.

- Garage Sale is scheduled for the spring, again with proceeds going strictly to the benefit of the students. Any contributions for the sale will be most appreciated, please contact either Laura Kelley (866-9056,
kelleyld@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu) or Christoph Rosenmüller (414-6469, crosenm@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu).
Messages can be left in their boxes in the History office.
- Movie and Music Events. All volunteers and supports please contact Justin Linam (314-8830; dogjam@aol.com) about setting up a benefit musical event or Evan Foster (862-3836; efoster@mailhost.tcs.tulane.edu) for arranging the
showing of a blockbuster movies such as "Star Wars.

APPEAL FOR FUNDING
WHAT THE MONEY WILL SUPPORT
- GENERAL FUND. A minimum of $750.00 is needed to defray the purchase of water and picnic lunches on the days
designated for visiting remote sites. Alll members of the excursion will benefit at approximately a savings of $85.00 per
participant.
- EMERGENCY FUND. A minimum of $500.00 for the costs of emergencies that will inevitably emerge during the
excursion (incidental travel, first aid, costs to replace lost travel documents, or unanticipated fees).

- STAFF PHOTOGRAPHERS. A total of $4,000.00 at $1000.00 for each of four student photographers responsible for
the Hi8 video, slides, and prints necessary to produce a professional level documentary, as well as educational and
promotion pictures.
- ASSISTANT PHOTOGRAPHERS. A total of $1000.00 or $250.00 for each of four assistant photographers. The
video assistants who will handle sound are particularly important
- STUDENT ASSISTANTSHIPS. A total of $1500.00 or $250.00 for each of six student assistant assigned menial tasks
on excursion as a means of obtaining funding. All student assistants on excursion must earn their money.
- GRADUATE STUDENT ASSISTANTSHIPS. A total of $4,000 for each of four graduate students accompanying
this excursion to supervise students and to handle correspondence, emergencies, the details of lectures on sites. Each
graduate student is directly responsible for five or six undergraduates.
- ASSISTANTSHIPS IN NUMISMATICS. A total of $6,625.00 for each of five student assistants to meet living
expenses of these student who will work in the coin cabinets at Ankara and Izmir Museums and on the coins from the
excavations of Metropolis and Gordion. The living expenses of each student is $1,225.00 for two months; a subsidy of
$500.00 is pledged to the excavation of Metropolis. Academic departments at Tulane have met only part of the
expenses. These student have the unique opportunity to assist Professor Harl in the publication of new material.
- PRODUCTION OF DOCUMENTARY. Film and professional editing will total nearly $5000.00, and only part of
these costs will be met by university sources.
CONTRIBUTIONS SHOULD BE MADE TO TULANE ACCOUNT 628881 (CLASSICAL AND BYZANTINE
PROGRAM). ALL CONTRIBUTIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE AND WILL BE APPLIED STRICTLY TO
THE BENEFIT OF THE STUDENTS.
