The History of the Ancient Near East and Greece
to the Death of Alexander the Great
In the light of the growth of civilization in the Near East, this survey course
covers Greek political, intellectual, and cultural developments to 323 B.C.
Emphasis is given to the archaic and classical periods of Greece.
The
High Roman Empire, 44 B.C.-305 A.D.
This Course introduces the institutional, social, and cultural changes of the
empire from Augustus to Diocletian. Stress is placed upon the birth of imperial
administration, cultural change and continuity, and the rise of Christianity.
Early Medieval and Byzantine Civilization: Constantine to
Crusades
Examines the birth of medieval Christian civilization after the collapse of
Roman power, that achievements of Byzantine civilization, the conversion of
Eastern Europe, and the impact of the Crusades.
Athenian
Empire: 480-404 B.C.
Seminar on the rise and fall of the Athenian Empire.
Conflict of Pagans and
Christians in the Roman Empire
Interdisciplinary colloquium examining the demise of Greco-Roman paganism and
the Christianization of the Mediterranean world between the first and fifth
centuries A.D.
Roman
Principate, 31 B.C.-70 A.D.
A seminar in Roman imperial history that examines the political, social, economic,
and aesthetic developments under the Julio-Claudian dynasty, 31 B.C.-68 A.D.
The
Later Roman Empire, 180-476
The class examines the impact of the crisis of the third century that
transformed the Classical world of the Roman peace into the world of Late
Antiquity. Major issues include military crisis and recovery in 235-305, reform
of late Roman state and society under the Dominate, changes in Classical
letters and aesthetics, the emergence of Christianity, and the collapse of the
Western Roman Empire.
The
Age of Justinian: The Empire Strikes Back
A seminar that examines the political, institutional, cultural, and religious
developments of the sixth century when the emperor Justinian (527-565) reunited
the Mediterranean world for the last time.
