Kenneth W. Harl, Ph.D.
Anatolian Civilizations

Proposed Numismatic Research in Turkey Tulane University, June 16 - August 1, 2000 Professor Kenneth W. Harl

MEMBERS:

Based on academic merit and skills in photography, Professor Kenneth W. Harl selected five assistants: Carol Lynn Abernathy (senior, Classics), Elizabeth Ann Gardiner (sophomore, Art History), Kristal Leah Kronillis (junior, Classics and History), Catherine Jean Mansell (M.A. candidate, Classics), and Courtney Ann Ward (sophomore, Classics and Geology).

PROJECTS:

We shall work with the two archaeological teams at Gordion and Metropolis, to identify and prepare for publication the excavation coins found at these sites, and with Dr. Sena Mutlu, curator of Byzantine coins, Ankara Museum, to prepare for publication a hoard of 3,600 copper anonymous folles found near Manzikert. Most coins of the Gordion excavation (1950-83) are housed in the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara; a small number are at the depots of the local museum and the excavation of house at Yassilhöyük. Most coins of Metropolis (found since 1988) are at the excavation house at Yeniköy, near Torbal; the coins of the "Bath Hoard" (1997) and certain other specimens are housed in the Archaeological Museum, Izmir.

Our goal is to produce accurate written catalogues of the coins as well as three different visual records, namely 1:1 black and white photos (to be used as plates for final publication), images scanned into a data base for publication on the internet, and cast collections. One set of casts is needed for each specimen in the Manzikert Hoard, but two casts of each specimen are needed for the coins of Gordion and Metropolis. A full set of the Gordion casts will be placed in the University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia, where the records of the excavations are kept, and a full set of Metropolis casts will be kept at the excavation house. A complete set of casts of all three projects will be housed at Tulane University.

GORDION COINS: The best specimens of the Gordion finds will be photographed and casts made. The coins must be checked against the catalogue and inventory prepared by Professor Kenneth W. Harl. Photos of the four Hellenistic hoards (1,3-4, and 6) and the electrum Lydian coins (hoard 7) are available in the University Museum, University of Pennsylvania, at Philadelphia. All the coins from the four unpublished hoards 2 (Persian sigloi), 8-9 (Hellenistic bronze coins), and 10 (Roman bronze coins) must be cast and photographed. The same is necessary for superior stray coins to be illustrated in the final catalogue. The number of coins is approximately 600 specimens.

THE MANZIKERT HOARD: A hoard of 3,600 Byzantine copper folles, many bearing Muslim countermarks, is in the possession of Dr. Sena Mutlu, Ankara Museum, who has catalogued and analyzed 750 specimens. The remaining 2,850 folles need to be weighed, measured, and identified. Casts and photographs of the superior specimens will be made. This is the first season of work on a hoard that will require at least an additional summer of study.

METROPOLIS: Courtney Ward will join the archaeological team as a member to learn field archaeology; Carol Abernathy, Elizabeth Gardiner, Kristal Kronillis, and Catherine Mansell will work on the coins from Metropolis. The best coins of the "Bath Hoard" have been cast and Professor Kenneth W. Harl and Kristal L. Kronillis will submit the hoard for publication by the American Numismatic Society in spring 2000. The hoard's coins (in the Izmir Museum) need to be photographed again for publication on the internet and to provide superior photos for an article in Archaeology to be written by Kristal Kronillis. Other coins from the Metropolis excavations in the Izmir Museum must be catalogued, weighed, photographed, and cast. The coins at the excavation house of Metropolis need to be identified, photographed, and cast. All coins of Metropolis must also be reorganized in proper envelopes and boxes which will be provided by Professor Harl. Professor Harl is mailing the relevant catalogues, monographs, and articles in photocopy so that the coins can be properly identified for publication. Some 2,000 coins (including the Bath Hoard in the Izmir Museum) have been found at Metropolis to date.

SCHEDULE:

In Ankara, we shall check the coins of Gordion, starting with the Greek coins, and then photograph and cast the relevant specimens. Catherine Mansell will photograph black and white 1:1 plates. Professor Harl and Elizabeth Gardiner will record with a digital camera to enter the photos into a computer. Kristal Kronillis, as senior assistant, will conduct a second check on the coins and she will take charge of casting the relevant specimens from Gordion so that she will direct Carol Abernathy and Courtney Ward. This project could be completed within five days. In addition, we shall visit Gordion to photograph and cast coins of 1979-1983. Since these coins are few in number, the work could be accomplished in several hours. Professor Mary Voigt, the field director of the new excavations since 1988, may request our expertise to cast and identify her recent coin finds.

Upon completion of the Gordion coins, the team will turn to the Manzikert hoard of Byzantine coins, ideally completing our work in the first week of July 2000. The team will share the work of identifying, weighing, and measuring coins; photography and casting will follow. Once the hoard's coins have been organized, photographed, and cast, then research and writing can be accomplished in the United States (although another summer visit may be necessary).

At Metropolis, Professor Recep Meriç is to provide us with a list of coins in the Izmir Museum. It is necessary to photograph again coins of the Bath Hoard, and to cast and photograph superior or unusual specimens of Metropolis in the Izmir Museum. At the excavation house, the team will similarly identify, weigh, measure, and record all specimens; casting and photography will follow. All members of the team will take turns digitizing the photos for the computer.

Professor Harl will give a workshop, with slide presentation, on the identification of Hellenistic coins commonly found at Anatolian sites. Professor Meriç may also wish lectures on late Roman and Byzantine coins for members of other Turkish teams invited to Metropolis. Kristal Kronillis and Catherine Mansell are likely to be asked to conduct workshops on casting and photography, respectively. The team may also be called upon to demonstrate the use of the digital camera and data base.

PUBLICATION:

Professor Kenneth W. Harl, in tandem with all assistants, will pen a scholarly synopsis of this summer's research and it will be submitted for publication by the American Journal of Archaeology. Catherine Mansell and Elizabeth Gardiner will be given credit for contributions in photography; all assistants will be named as co-authors with Professor Harl.

The Bath Hoard from Metropolis will be prepared for publication by Professor Kenneth W. Harl and Kristal L. Kronillis and the article will be submitted to the American Journal of Numismatics published by the American Numismatic Society in spring 2000.

The coins of Gordion, 1950-1983, are to be prepared for publication by Kenneth W. Harl as a volume in the Gordion series by the University of Pennsylvania Press, with catalogue, commentary and monetary history. The manuscript should be finished by the end of 2000. All assistants will be given due credit in the forward and the right to put this project on their resumés. Letters of recommendation by Professor Harl will be provided for each assistant's file.

The Manzikert Hoard, Ankara Museum, will be prepared for publication jointly by Dr. Sena Mutlu and Professor Kenneth W. Harl. All assistants on this project will receive due credit, but inclusion in the authorship will depend on the work of each assistant and the consent of Dr. Mutlu who has the right to publish the hoard. This publication will not be ready until 2001.

The coins of Metropolis is a future publication by Kenneth W. Harl and its completion will follow the other projects. Credit or inclusion in authorship will depend on the work of each assistant.

Kristal L. Kronillis has the right to publish the coins of Metropolis under her own name as articles for Archaeology and Dig magazines of the AIA, and the Turkish Times. Catherine Mansell and Elizabeth Gardiner are to illustrate these articles and will receive due credit; contributions by Carol Abernathy and Courtney Ward are to be duly acknowledged as well.
