. . . a dog named Jethro . . . a cat named Felix for wind quintet, was composed during July of 1993 in Fontainebleau, France. There it received its premiere performance and was awarded the Prix Maurice Ravel. The piece is in two movements, Largo cantabile and Allegro molto con brio. The first movement features the French horn and the flute, while the rest of the ensemble plays an undulating harmonic background. The second movement is a lively, mixed-metered scherzando wherein each instrument takes its turn playing with a ball of yarn.
