1. An epidemiologist from the health department in a farming
state wants to test the hypothesis that exposure to pesticides
used in farming increases the risk of developing certain
cancers.
a. What are the advantages and disadvantages of conducting a
cohort study?
b. What are the advantages and disadvantages of conducting a
case-control study?
c. If you chose a case-control study, how would you choose the
controls?

2. In the Reyes' Syndrome study a second set of controls was
selected. These were children from the same neighborhood as the
cases. Presence of antecedent illness was not manipulated. What
hypothesis could this set of controls address?

3. An epidemiologist wants to test the hypothesis that drinking
surface water increases the risk of colon cancer. She will draw
cases from two regions in a state. In one region the drinking
water is surface water, and in another it is deep ground water.
She will individually match controls to cases. Controls will be
hospital based. Should region be a matching criterion also?
