Research History. The CeROS researchers have been actively working on major world river systems for over two decades (see Research History). Collectively, CeROS represents more than 70 years of experience in river-ocean studies that includes research in 7 of the top 10 major world river systems. This research has been supported by over 50 grants from a dozen different sources (state, federal, private and international). Products of this research include over 100 peer-reviewed publications on river-ocean research, and authorship of workshop reports focused on the past, present and future processes in river-ocean environments. During the past 5 years Tulane has hosted two of these workshops.

RiOMar Workshops. The first workshop at Tulane that focused on river-dominated ocean margins (RiOMar) was held in October 1998. Tulane University and The Tulane/Xavier Center supported this initial workshop for Bioenvironmental Research, which involved 30 ocean scientists from the U.S. The goal of the workshop was to gauge interest in the topic of river-ocean research and to identify general topics for future discussions. No written document resulted from this inaugural workshop.
In November 2001, a second RiOMar workshop was held in New Orleans on the campus of Tulane University. This workshop was part of a community initiative sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Aviation Administration (NASA). Over 50 scientists from 29 academic and federal institutions in 21 states participated in this Earth and Ocean Science community workshop, which assessed the current state-of-knowledge and the future challenges for research in river-ocean environments. For more information about the workshop and to download a copy of the workshop document, see the RiOMar webpage (www.tulane.edu/~riomar).
