About New Orleans

Historical Contributions of the Department

Formerly the College of Technology at Tulane University, the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering has consistently played a key role in the development of the City of New Orleans. The city's constant struggle against deteriorating wetlands and rising river waters have given our faculty real-life challenges to overcome.

The contributions by our engineers, in conjunction with the city, Army Corps of Engineers and Tulane's Health Science Center, can be seen in the city's drainage and canal system, levee system and coastal preservation systems as well as our raised interstates and spillways.

These accomplishments and more are catalogued in Robert Bruce's work, "Engineering A Century (1894 - 1994)."
